Selection of blades and saw blades

During cutting, processing speed and cleanliness are inversely related. Chips on the cut will appear in any case. That is why the main task is to reduce their size to such a value at which they can be easily eliminated by subsequent types of processing. The chipping will be smaller if the saw teeth are small. In this case, the sawing process must occur at a right angle so that the cutting edge touches the surface of the material. Therefore, the selection of a suitable circular disc is an essential factor for accurate work.

Jigsaw saw blades are different. Typically, a series of clean cut files is used for chip-free cutting. They are distinguished by their small size and lack of pronounced orientation of the teeth. Typically, these teeth are in the shape of an isosceles triangle and can cut in both directions.

Clean-cut saws are characterized by the complete absence of set-up and the opposite direction of sharpened adjacent teeth. In order for the master to have the possibility of curly cutting with a small wiring, the files are made narrow in width. For this reason, they are often fragile.

For clean cutting of sheet materials, blades can be used that are designed to work with various metal products. These saws have the smallest tooth size, so the cutting process is very slow and efficient. Due to the small width of the blades for cutting metal, a figured finishing cut can be carried out with a small bending radius of 60-80 centimeters. Low-quality files can quickly become dull and chipped. Therefore, you do not need to purchase the cheapest consumables.

Zero-clearance technique

Carpentry craftsmen often use the principle of finishing the sole of their cutting tools, which consists in reducing the gap between the pressure pad and the leg. This measure is guaranteed to eliminate the effect of “breaking” the crust in the upper layers of the material.

Zero clearance is achieved by attaching the cover plate to the tool support leg. The onlay has only one narrow hole (slot) that fits snugly against the cutting body. Because of this, even a small feed force of the tines can ensure that small chips are sheared off rather than turning out the chips in the top layer.

The most durable linings are made of sheet plastic (fluoroplastic, PVC), metal or fiberglass. If the linings are made of metal (soft aluminum or duralumin), then they must be carefully polished to avoid vibration.

Application of adhesive tapes

Adhesive tape (tape, electrical tape, fiberglass) can be used to protect the back of the material being processed. To do this, you need to stick a tape along the cut mowing line, which protects the material from pulling out large fragments.

Pasting surfaces is one of the most effective ways to ensure the cleanliness of a figured cut with a jigsaw. But masking tape is not suitable for these purposes because of its fragility. The highest quality cut can be obtained by pasting the cut material with aluminum or fiberglass reinforced tape. It should be wide enough so that at least 15 centimeters of the material surface is covered on each side of the cut. In addition, the density of the sticker is important. The tape must be carefully pressed down with a dry cloth and wrinkles must be excluded at all costs.

Do not use a tape with a very strong adhesive, because during the tearing process it can carry away small fragments of the laminated surface or MDF panels. In addition, strong peeling off of the strip will lead to an increase in microcracks that have already formed during cutting. You also need to pay attention to how easily adhesive traces are removed and whether the adhesion of the adhesive is high for working with rough materials (not sanded plywood and OSB).

Sawing with a panel saw

The workpiece is placed on the table and fixed in a stationary state. The necessary markings are made on the sheet and the saw unit is turned on. When the disc reaches a sufficient speed, the table moves forward along with the wooden plates and hits the disc.

  • Depth of cut;
  • Cutting angle.

Chipboard cutting machines are divided into 3 types:

  1. Lungs. For 5 hours of continuous work;
  2. Medium. Up to 10 hours;
  3. Heavy. Up to 20 hours.

What the cutting machine consists of:

  • The bed is the mount on which the entire mechanism rests. A heavy bed will add stability to the instrument and eliminate vibration. This is important for a quality cut.
  • Saw unit. Consists of 2 flat metal discs. The first cuts the slab first, and the second cuts through it completely.
  • Work tables. Three take part in the process at once. The first is for the location of the unit, the second is for feeding the sawn-off plates (movable), the third is for supporting the sawn-off parts.
  • Carriage. Allows the movable table to move. In this case, the workpiece is fixed with a stop and rulers in the required position.

Methods for cutting chipboard without chips

You need to saw the laminated board with a special machine (format-saw). But its price is too high (from 50,000 to 100,000 rubles) when it comes to home use. An alternative can be budget options (hacksaw, jigsaw, etc.), which will take more time to cut, but require less cash investment.

Using a hacksaw

Sawing with a hacksaw at home is quite difficult. First, you need to cut the measuring line with a knife and glue adhesive tape over it. This will protect the top layer from damage. Aim the tool at an angle of 30 degrees. Carefully, without strong pressure, move the hacksaw back and forth. To cut chipboard without chips with a hacksaw at home, choose devices with the finest teeth. In case of damage, the cut must be passed with a file, guiding it from the edge to the center. Finally, rub with sandpaper (fine-grained) and hide the defects under the flexible profile.

How to cut a chipboard with a jigsaw without chips?

Laminated chipboard is one of the most widespread materials used in the independent manufacture of furniture. You can talk about its advantages and disadvantages for a long time. But it is much more important to learn how to cut chipboard with a jigsaw without chips.

Features and recommendations

Experts and connoisseurs advise doing this kind of work with electric jigsaws, just because an ordinary hand hacksaw is too rough. It doesn’t cut the material straight enough. The correct sequence of steps is as follows:

Preparation of tools (ruler, jigsaw, measuring tape, awl or other sharp device for drawing on chipboard);

Addition of these tools (if necessary) with a square for laying right angles;

Measuring the desired part (with a reserve of 0.2 cm so that it can be adjusted);

Drawing a line along the ruler;

Actually, the cut along the laid mowing line;

Finalization of the saw cut with sandpaper;

With a very poor quality of the end. Rubbing it with a fine, similar in tonality to chipboard.

What else do you need to know?

When it is planned to saw off everything without chips on one side, it is permissible to use saws with both upper and lower teeth. Most craftsmen prefer small, straight-toothed files. Such devices chip less material, but at the same time they work pretty well. After the saw cut, it is best to process the ends with emery stretched over even bars. If there is no ready-made crayon of a suitable color, you can mix different crayons, like paints in an artist’s palette, and get a new color.

To cut without errors and moreover quickly, one must always take into account the brand markings. There is no generally binding designation standard yet, but almost all firms strictly follow the classification developed by Bosch specialists. Or at least they indicate it along with their own abbreviations and terms. For cutting wood and products based on it, CV files (sometimes referred to as HCS) are well suited.

Some inscriptions indicate in which mode the tool works optimally:

Basic. A simple blade that allows you to make a high quality clean cut;

Speed. A device whose teeth are set apart (this allows you to cut faster);

Clean. A canvas that has not been diluted (usually gives the cleanest cut).

If the workpiece is relatively thick, preferably a saw blade with large incisors that have not been set, then there will be minimal deviation from the vertical. The longitudinal (in relation to the fibers) cut is most often made with helical saws. For a transverse, a straight canvas is better. When you plan to make a blank for furniture, it is advisable to choose a less productive, but more accurate tool. Since most files now produced cut the material as they are pulled in, the workpiece will need to be machined from the inside out.

How to cut chipboard

How to cut chipboard without chips.

We recently bought a coffee table, the price is inexpensive, but there is a “but”. The height of the table for our interior is too big. It would be nice to reduce the height by 10 centimeters. As they say, we are not looking for easy ways, I decided that

I can do it myself.

I remembered that on our site there is an asoleg specialist who made a computer desk with his own hands, of course, I am far from him, but some recommendations can help. I contacted him, explained the problem and he kindly shared his secret. With his permission, I publish his technology for cutting furniture chipboard without chips.

Everything turned out to be corny and simple. We mark the cutting line. Then, with a clerical knife, along a ruler, cut through the top layer of chipboard. Just run the knife several times with little effort along the mowing line of the cut. (I recommend practicing on the unnecessary part of the chipboard) If you press very hard, the decorative layer will begin to swell and turn out not very nice.

Further, retreating 1-2 millimeters from the intended mowing line towards the rough part, cut it with a jigsaw or a suitable file with teeth directed to the saw handle. We make a wash down on the opposite side of the cut so that there is no chipping at the end of the cut. And we saw through to the end. You need to cut carefully, slowly. Then, with a medium grain sandpaper, fixed on a bar, we clean the end of the part. If necessary, remove the millimeter that we retreated. My cut turned out to be almost perfect, after processing with sandpaper there were no scoring at all. The photo shows the difference between the left and right sides of the cut. Well, and, accordingly, if both parts of the chipboard are needed, we cut it with a knife on both sides of the cut. We measure the thickness of the cut of a jigsaw or file, add 2 millimeters. The result is the distance that should be between the slots made with a clerical knife. Cut exactly between these lines. Then there will be no scuffs on the other side. Naturally you need to use a sharp tool, I use a tool sharpening machine.

Everything worked out great. On the finished table, my wife did not find the place where I cut.

Thanks for the assistance and help asoleg.

How to cut chipboard without chips?

Before starting to cut chipboard, especially laminated chipboard, cut the line with a sharp tool, along which we will cut and glue paper tape with a sticky layer along it. This will help to minimize damage to the decorative chipboard layer.

If chips still could not be avoided, we process the cut first with a file, working from the edges to the center, and then with a fine-grained sandpaper. It is also possible to mask all defects by using a flexible profile where possible.

Sawing chipboard. Methods and methods of processing

[contents] If you have tried to cut chipboard at home at least once, then you know for sure that this work is by no means simple and requires not only skill, but also a good tool. Laminated chipboard is especially difficult to process, when sawing it often produces a lot of chips. That is why many craftsmen, faced with such a problem, come to the conclusion that it is better to cut the chipboard when buying, especially since many trading organizations provide such services and the price for them is quite acceptable.

Sawing of chipboard is carried out using precise panel saws, which will help to obtain blanks of a given size and shape.

In addition to cutting sheets, they will help you to calculate and provide in the form of a visual file several options for competent and economical cutting of sheet material (using special computer programs) and, if necessary, perform edging. However, if for some reason you prefer to do this work yourself, you will have to do some preparatory work before sawing the chipboard.

Figured cutting

It is even more difficult to obtain curved surfaces of a given configuration at home, while you will have to additionally spend money on purchasing a router, which will help you get rid of chips and notches formed when you cut chipboard.

To cut chipboard, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Having marked out the contours of the necessary part on the chipboard sheet, we cut it out with an electric jigsaw, trying to cut, retreating only a couple of millimeters from the intended mowing line of the cut;
  2. We make templates of the design radius from fiberboard or plywood and carefully grind the ends with sandpaper;
  3. Attaching the template to the part to be trimmed, clamp it with clamps and process it with a manual copying cutter with a bearing, removing excess material exactly to the intended mowing line.

It does not matter which cutter (with two or four knives used). The only condition is that the knives must grasp the cut thickness being processed along the entire height. After processing, it remains only to stick the edge on the part. How it’s done. Look at:
