How to Make a Silent Muffler On a Chainsaw
Chainsaws sold are equipped with sound damping devices. Their effectiveness is not always satisfactory, so users often install an additional or alternative silencer on a chainsaw.
Why is a chainsaw noisy and why do you need a silencer
A person calmly tolerates noise of 40 dB. The operation of the chainsaw creates noise pollution, sometimes up to 120 dB. Its two-stroke single-cylinder engine generates more annoying sound vibrations than a four-cylinder car engine.
Chainsaw silencer reduces noise by:
- Redirecting exhaust from the combustion of the fuel mixture;
- Crushing them;
- Change in gas volumes;
- Equalization of gas pulsation.
In addition, it extinguishes sparks, reduces the temperature and speed of the exhaust gas mixture, and takes it to the side. In this case, there should be a minimum of obstacles to the exit of gases and air intake.
Which to choose
Direct-flow silencing system can be worn directly on the factory silencing element of the saw. Noise is significantly reduced: the damping of the sound provides a narrowing into the funnel of the internal section. However, being large, the design may interfere with free operation.
A rifled silencer for a chainsaw is also worn on the original. It is small, has an inlet tube with holes that are separated by a helical partition. Exhaust gases entering the pipe exit through openings whose diameters are not the same. This provides crushing of the exhaust force and damping of the sound.
Industrial silencers comply with all safety requirements.
In two-stroke engines, and most of the chainsaws are equipped with such, the plug is part of the engine, since a certain portion of the working mixture after discharge is again fed into the cylinder. Therefore, it should be borne in mind that any intrusion into the mechanism in order to make work quieter creates the risk of overheating the system or lowering its power.
How to make a muffler for a chainsaw
There are several options for how to make your own device to reduce noise.
Simple noise reduction techniques exist, such as placing a metal washcloth in a silencer. The method works, but the engine power is slightly reduced.
Another simple recommendation is how to make the chainsaw more quiet: put a hose on the exhaust outlet and lower it into a bucket of water. To do this, 3 bolts are unscrewed from the damping cube of the saw to remove the plug. A self-made flange (cut from the roofing iron) is inserted into the free space and fastened to the same 3 bolts. A rubber hose about 3 m long is put on the flange, the other end of which is immersed in water.
The disadvantages of this method are:
- Binding to a bucket of water reduces the mobility of the worker;
- Rubber hoses burn out quickly.
It is better if the flexible hose is with a metal sheath. This will prevent its quick damage. The bucket can be replaced with a plastic canister.
You can make a muffler for a chainsaw with your own hands from tin sheets. It is necessary to bend two pipes from them. One should correspond in diameter to the hole for exhaust exhausts of the saw, and the other should be 2.5 cm wider. Many holes with a diameter of 3 mm are drilled in a narrow pipe. They can be positioned as you like, but the distance between them should be at least 5 mm.
The resulting perforated pipe is wound with metal, a basalt cord and aluminum wire. Winding is done tightly, otherwise exhausts under pressure will blow it. A wide tube is put on top and connected to the inner bolts. The butt is welded with a steel washer. The resulting additional silencer is put on a regular one and fixed with rivets.
The most effective muffler removes no more than 30% of the noise generated by the chainsaw: the sound arises not only at the gas outlet, but also at the air inlet, the saw chain moves loudly, etc. Therefore, it is worth using alternative methods to reduce sound load. For personal protection, earplugs, anti-noise headphones are effective, and portable sound-reflecting fences partially protect against loud sounds of surrounding people.
