What oil to use for your power tiller?. If your single axle tractor is equipped with a Briggs & Stratton engine

Engine oils for power tillers. types and characteristics

A modern single axle tractor consists of a multitude of mechanisms that require lubricant to function properly and smoothly. The quality and properties of the latter determine not only the durability of the machine elements, but also the efficiency of its application in various conditions.

It is not for nothing that the engine is called the “heart” of the motor-block. Exactly on the condition of the first, in many respects, depends the performance of the unit. The engine, in turn, cannot run without proper engine oil.

The latter performs several important functions at once:

  • cools the engine of a power tiller under heavy loads;
  • it lubricates the engine parts;
  • cleans the internal engine cavities from blockages;
  • seals the fuel mixture, making it of higher quality.

During the operation of an air-cooled engine, the lubricant used evaporates and accumulates on the surface of the hot cylinder. As a result, the oil turns into smoky exhaust gases together with the fuel. All the fuel combustion products that collect on the parts of the motoblock make them much more difficult to lubricate. To prevent this, many companies-manufacturers of motor-blocks advise to use special antioxidants, whose task is to clean the engine parts from harmful deposits, together with the lubricant.

All commercially available motor oils are classified according to the SAE system.

According to it, the market distinguishes the following lubricants:

  • summer oils. these products are designed primarily for use in summer. They are of high viscosity, and are not marked with a letter on the package. These formulations include SAE 20, SAE 30, SAE 40;
  • winter oils. materials of this type are used to lubricate the engines of motor blocks for the winter period. They are characterized by low viscosity and the presence of the letter W in the label, which stands for “Winter”. The number of winter oils includes compositions SAE 0W, SAE 10W, SAE 20W;
  • Multigrade oils. these formulations are the most in demand. They are universally applicable, as they can be successfully used both in winter and summer. There is a double marking on their packaging. These oils include the compositions 5W-30 and 10W-40.

To select oil for a power tiller, you should also take into account its composition.

Manufacturers produce lubricants for engines with these compositions:

You can also find oils on the market for both 2-stroke engines and directly for 4-stroke engines. Most modern power tillers are equipped with 4-stroke engines with built-in air cooling systems. You should only use 4-stroke oil in these engines.

A forced-air-cooled motor heats up considerably more than an actively water-cooled one during operation. Single axle tractor engines with this cooling system require oils with high thermal-oxidative stability and fairly low volatility. Besides, the oil used for engine lubrication must conform to all known modern requirements of ecological compatibility, in other words, it must show admissible level of toxicity of exhausted gases and smoke.

Special Care

There are a large number of very different power tillers, each with its own characteristics, specific characteristics and other differences, so you can pick up exactly the kind of equipment for the care of your plot, which seems to you the most attractive.

However, it is worth remembering that like any other machine, power tillers Sadko, Don, Huter, Profi, LANDER, Champion, Carver, Husqvarna, Lifan 6,5 and others require constant care, proper use and a good attitude. After all, this unit is very similar to a car, so the care of it should correspond.

Changing

Change the oil in the engine of your power tiller at intervals listed in its manual, usually 60-80 engine hours. The specified interval should be shortened in heavy-duty applications or when using cheap mineral oils.

Before changing the oil on your power tiller, lay the engine flat and warm it up so the oil flows off better. Then unscrew the oil filler plug and the drain plug by placing a container of suitable volume under it.

Be careful not to get burned by hot oil.

When you are satisfied that the used oil has stopped dripping, replace the oil drain plug and fill the crankcase with new oil through a clean funnel, referring to the oil capacity specified on the oil filler plug.

Since the engine is lubricated by splashing oil from the crankshaft only, try to keep the oil level at the maximum mark. Fill low-lying filler-holes without dipstick with oil until oil appears on the threads.

If your power tiller engine has a reduction gearbox, do the same with that too. Most often the gearbox does not have an oil dipstick, and in order to measure the right amount of oil, use a small container of known volume.

Additional features of these oils

Also, when choosing the right lubricant for the motor of the cultivator, you need to consider the recommendations on their type. It depends on the base oils used. According to this basis, all lubricants are divided into 3 types:

  • Mineral. These are the most affordable oils that can be used on older engines with low loads. The disadvantages of these materials are low resistance to low temperatures, less stability, so you have to change much more often.
  • Synthetics. Expensive, but stable and highly effective greases that can withstand high loads and wide temperature variations. Recommended for winter use only, because they are better able to withstand low temperatures than other types.
  • Semi-synthetics. It is a middle ground between mineral and synthetic products, but it is closer to the latter in terms of reliability of operation and engine protection. Semi-synthetic lubricants are rightly considered a universal option, as they are suitable for a wide range of conditions of use and workloads.

Another quite important characteristic of gasoline engine oils is the type of power unit by the number of strokes. powerful cultivators are equipped with 4-stroke motors, which are largely similar to automobile power plants: the oil is poured into a separate sump and fed by a special pump. These models are more reliable and economical, but their weight is significantly higher.

2-stroke units differ primarily in the way of lubrication. oil is added directly to the gas tank in the proportion prescribed by the manufacturer of the equipment. Such motocultivators are easier and cheaper by design, but their reliability, as practice shows, is much lower. The peculiarities of the oil intended for such engines are:

Depending on what type of gasoline engine is installed on your tool, you need to choose the right oil. they are not interchangeable, a mistake in the choice can lead to the need to flush the lubrication, fuel and other engine systems.

How to choose the right oil

The chemical composition of the oil is an important factor in engine oil selection. Minerals are excellent for reducing the frictional force of parts, thereby reducing wear on the machine. Semi-synthetic oils provide more stable engine operation. However, they have an increased fluidity, which is not suitable for engines with heavy wear elements. Synthetic oils prevent fouling, protecting the engine from breakdowns.

Single axle tractor engine oil must meet the following requirements:

  • Reduced kinematic viscosity over a wide temperature range. This is necessary to avoid oil starvation during engine warm-up.
  • Oil should have low coking characteristics. Particularly relevant for air-cooled engines.

The lubricant has several functions during operation: cooling, cleaning, lubrication and sealing.

Is it necessary to add oil to gasoline for a power tiller??

To find out whether it is necessary to dilute gasoline for a power tiller, it is necessary to study the instructions for its operation. This label indicates if the engine is a 2 or 4 stroke.

If a single-axle tractor is equipped with a 2-stroke motor, then the fuel mixture for it must necessarily consist of gasoline and oil. When preparing the mixture, observe the exact ratio specified by the manufacturer in the operating manual. At the same time, fuel for a motoblock with a 4-stroke engine does not need to be mixed with oil, as all 4 strokes of such motors work on pure fuel.

It should be remembered that motor blocks, which are filled with diesel, also do not need to prepare the fuel mixture. The fact that all diesel engines are 4-stroke engines and run on pure fuel.

Special care

There are a lot of different power tillers, each has its own characteristics, specific characteristics and other differences, so you can pick up this type of equipment for the care of their site, which seems to you maximum attractive.

Checking the level

To check the level in the engine crankcase, most models have a dipstick with markings for min and max. When the dipstick is taken out of the crankcase, there is oil on it, which indicates the amount of. If the level does not seem accurate, wipe it off completely with a cloth, put it back in the crankcase and pull it out. Oil is sure to remain on the dipstick and indicate its level.

It is not thought possible to overfill either the gearbox or the engine of a power tiller. It is not possible to fill above the lip of the hole as it will immediately be drawn back out. The level at the edge of the hole is normal for the engine. It is normal to have too much oil in the gearbox. This is why there is no dipstick for the oil level in the gearbox.

You may use an improvised dipstick. a piece of wire, etc to check the oil level in the gearbox.д.

Some engines, however, do not allow too much oil in the crankcase. This can cause high pressure inside the assembly, leaking glands and seals, splashing. With worn piston rings and cylinder mirror, oil can also get into the combustion chamber, on the spark plugs, which is extremely undesirable. That’s why it’s better to fill up the engine with oil according to the recommendations of the Instruction.

The quantity and quality of oil should be monitored, this determines the service life of the entire motoblock.

Some change it every year in the spring, just before the season starts. Other owners don’t change for years. Others put the counter of engine hours and change it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. For example, every 500 hours.

It makes sense to change oil after the running-in period, because small filings and metal chips generated during the lapping of new assemblies may be present in the oil. These inclusions in the oil are highly undesirable, since they themselves already lead to wear and abrasion.
