Reviews And Comparisons Of Snapper Lawn Mowers

Snapper Lawn mowers have a long and colorful history; one built on vision and as some would say, on sheer guts.

It began with a rotary mower called the snappin’ turtle in 1951.

From the first 16 Snapping turtles made, the company was soon shipping 3,973 Snappin turtles to various cities in the United States of America.

The Snappin’ Turtle can be seen in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington as an example of the pioneering lawn mower that was produced in the United States.

Snapper was bought in 2002 by Simplicity owned by Jim Weir, who would go down in history as the man who said no to the biggest wholesaler in the US, Wal-Mart

This he did to further strengthen the reputation of Snapper lawn mowers as reliable and durable products.

The Snapper brand was and is known not for its price but for its performance and its durability and had already built a reputation that had spanned several generations.

The evolution of the Snapper lawn mower

Snapper Lawnmowers have evolved from the Snappin’ Turtle that was a simple walk behind rotary mower suitable for suburban lawns to zero turn riding mowers and tractor mowers that cut acres of green fields faster and efficiently.

The Snapper Turtle was much easier to move around compared to the earlier power reel mowers and less expensive.

Riding mowers were the next logical step as the need to cover larger areas in a shorter amount of time arose.

The first riding lawn mower had an innovative rear engine.

Soon, hydrostatic engines were introduced together with stick steering mechanism and mulching systems.

changes came when Simplicity took over and later on, Snapper was bought by the industry giant Briggs Stratton.

Snapper continues to produce a wide variety and range of lawn mower machines.

The Snapper walk-behind Series

This mower can move around 12-inch radius which normally only a push mower would do.

The series also has an auto lever to ensure a consistently even cut regardless of the nature of the surface.

Snapper riding mowers have a pivoting frame to handle the contours of the land.

They also have a feature where the user can chose to mulch, or discharge clippings from the side or inside a bag.

They range from the 150Z series that is excellent at easily trimming around trees to the 285Z series which handles even tighter areas and can be spun around obstacles with ease.

Summary

It doesn’t take me to tell you that a lawn mower needs both power and reliability to be effective. When you think about everything that the Snapper XD offers, it’s easy to see why it has been such a well-received model. Now, in this review, I’ll be looking at the Snapper XD 21″ mower which is ideal for slightly larger yards. However, if you need something a little smaller, there is also a 19” StepSense kit available called the Snapper XD 82V MAX Cordless Electric 19″. One of the great advantages of this model is that with StepSense, the mower will auto-adjust to your pace to make mowing more comfortable.

But back to the star of the show today. The Snapper XD 21″ is a self-propelled mower that adapts its own power output and has three ways to mow – mulching, bagging, and side discharge. over, it features seven cutting heights so nobody can say that this isn’t a versatile piece of equipment.

It comes with a solid and durable steel deck, folding handles and large rear wheels for greater stability. There’s not much this mower can’t do and in this Snapper XD 21″ cordless self-propelled mower review, I’ll be giving you a rundown on all the details.

Power System And Battery

One of the things that immediately caught my attention with this Snapper XD was that it runs on Briggs Stratton batteries. This is a company known for making batteries that are reliable, powerful and robust. If you want something that won’t let you down, this is it. over, it runs on a decent 1200 watt motor and has a very generous running time.

The mower is supplied with two 2.0Ah 86v batteries, each of which gives you a running time of 45 minutes, depending on the lawn conditions. Provided you have both fully charged at the beginning of the mow, you’ll get up to 90 minutes in total. It is worth pointing out here, that these run times are maximum run times and are measured without the mower having any resistance. Having said that if you follow a regular maintenance schedule, you will be achieving close to these run times, but just be aware that any longer grass will reduce the total.

What’s even better is that there are other batteries available if you want to up your run time. Briggs Stratton also created 4.0Ah and 5.0Ah batteries for this tool and all of the batteries can be power shared across the Snapper garden range. In this range, you’ll find everything from a chainsaw to a hedge trimmer and a weed wacker to a leaf blower.

The system comes with a Rapid charger which is great for refilling your batteries quickly and efficiently. See the table below for more details.

Snapper XD Briggs Stratton Battery Charge Times

Performance

This Snapper XD 21″ is a self-propelled mower so you’ll notice that it handles much more easily than a chunky gas powered tool. But what’s most exciting is that it has an intelligent load sense, which means that it will adjust the power as it’s needed. When more power is required, the mower has got it all figured out for you. What’s more, this is great news for your running time as you won’t be ploughing through power when it’s not needed.

The mower features variable speed and is beautifully quiet. One of the perks of going cordless is the lower noise levels, so this is a nice change from those noisy gas mowers with high maintenance requirements.

Deck And Blade

Steel is one of the most effective and reliable materials used to make mowers and with the robust steel deck, you can feel confident that this is a durable mower. With a 21-inch cutting diameter, this Snapper XD is ideal for slightly larger yards, giving you more coverage on each pass. Furthermore, with the cordless design, you will be able to reach the far corners of the yard without being restricted; that’s a thumbs up from me!

Handles

If you are short on storage space, this Snapper XD 21″ lawn mower has an innovative design that is perfect for saving storage space. The handles fold down completely flat at the deck point, allowing for super handy vertical storage.

On a slightly less positive note, due to the arched design of the handles, there is no way to grab the self-propelled gear lever without removing one of you hands from the bars. The gap between the handles and the lever is just too wide. Not a show stopper, but just something to be aware of.

Grass Catcher Bag

The Snapper XD 21” doesn’t only offer mulching and side discharge but is a 3-in-1 lawn mower that comes with a very impressive grass catcher bag. With space for up to 2.1 cubic liters, you will be able to spend more time mowing and less time stopping to empty the grass catcher bag.

This is a soft grass bag that is easy to remove and empty. Once you’re done, simply reattach it and be on your way; no complicated processes or fiddly bits to worry about.

Height Adjustment

One of the things that makes this a superior mower is that it features seven cutting heights. With some cordless mowers, you’d be lucky to get five cutting heights, so I really feel like this is a generous offering that will accommodate all seasons and conditions of your lawn.

While the mowers of old may have required you to flip the machine over and fiddle about with height adjustment, this one boasts an easy to use single lever. Simply pull it to set the mower to your chosen height and get on with the job.

Mulching

Mulching is super important for your grass and provides it with a natural fertilizer that is incredibly nitrogen-rich. Not all lawn mowers offer this feature. but this Snapper XD comes through again and is complete with a mulching mode. over, there is also the option to use the side discharge chute if this is something you prefer.

When you use the mulching plug, the grass clippings will circulate around the deck for longer so that the blades can finely chop them. Once they are delivered back to the lawn, they’ll make their way down to where they are needed most, replenishing the lawn making it healthier, greener and thicker.

See my article “Benefits And Advantages Of Mulching Your Grass” to lean more about the benefits of mulching.

Practicalities

The great thing about any cordless lawn mower is that those tricky start ups are completely eliminated. If you have long struggled priming a gas mower, then the push button start on this Snapper XD 21″ will feel like heaven. The button is perfectly placed for easy reach with the variable speed control just as easy to adjust.

Furthermore, this Snapper comes with a folding handle which makes storing it that much simpler. In addition to this, it can be stowed vertically so if you’re lacking space in the shed, it will take up much less room.

While I am very confident in the quality and build of this lawn mower, it is nice to see that there is a generous warranty in place. You’ll get a five year warranty on the tool itself as well as a two year battery warranty, so you’re covered for every eventuality. This long warranty also gives you the confidence that you are buying a tool that will help you around the yard for many years to come.

Snapper Self Propelled Mower Overview

When they first hit the market some 20 or so years ago, people were initially very skeptical about electric lawnmowers, specifically regarding their battery life and durability. However, advances in battery and electric motor technology have allowed manufacturers make huge leaps in what a cordless mower is capable of.

The Snapper XD 82V is one such lawnmower that has taken the battery powered mower segment to new heights.

This lightweight 21” electric lawnmower features a powerful 1200 watt motor powered by 2 equally beefy 82 volt 2.0Ah battery that can charge to full capacity in just an hour. Stainless steel blades and a Smart loading sensor technology ensure a good cut that changes to meet the demands of the cutting blade. A push-button and single lever with 7 different height positions only add to the ease of use.

One defining feature of the Snapper is the one-push button ignition system that lets you start it up without yanking on an annoying cord. The lawnmower also lets you dispose of clippings as mulch, retrieved from a bag, or discharged from the side. Another neat feature is the self-propel system that makes it much easier to wheel around.

The XD 82V electric cordless lawnmower is another stud in the belt of esteemed hardware manufacturer Snapper, a Wisconsin-based company that has a storied 100-year history of crafting professional lawn-care and snow-removal equipment.

Things To Consider Before Buying An Electric Lawnmower

Some people might still be skeptical about electric mowers, so here are some benefits of electric mowers over gas mowers and some considerations to think about.

No Gas Required

First off, electric mowers don’t need any gas to run. This might sound obvious, but few realize just how good of a benefit this is.

First off, you won’t have to pay for gas to keep her running, which saves you money in the long run.

Second, the EPA estimates that a new gas-powered lawnmower produces as much volatile emissions in one hour as 11 cars being driven for one hour do.

So an electric lawnmower is much more eco-conscious.

Very Little Servicing

Since it is electric, you won’t have to worry about changing the oil and can get away with much less frequent engine maintenance. You never have to worry about changing and belts, gears, oils, and the like.

Much Lighter Than Gas Models

Lastly, electric lawnmowers tend to be much lighter than gas motors, because they are not full of liquid while in operation, and they have fewer heavy-duty parts.

Electric lawnmowers also tend to be made out of lighter composite materials unlike the metals of gas-powered lawnmowers.

Considerations

One problem with electric motors is that you need to find the correct sized battery with the right voltage and amperes.

Gas-powered lawn mowers can be run on any normal unleaded gasoline.

Also, electric lawnmowers tend to have a smaller deck width than gas-powered ones. However, once you factor in how more efficient electric lawn mowers are overall, these issues are not that big of a deal.

Snapper XD 82V Features and Benefits

3-in-1 Deck Style

The deck of a lawnmower refers to the undercarriage of the lawnmower. The Snapper has an interesting (if somewhat common these days) 3-in-1 deck design that lets you choose how to dispose of lawn clippings.

You can connect it to a bag to collect clippings to discard later, set it on mulch mode and create a mulchy base for your yard, or keep it simple and discharge the clipping through the side. Most lawnmowers only give you one or two deck options so it’s nice to see something that gives you all three.

The side discharge and bag modes work extremely well, but we will say that the mulch setting works but it’s nothing special.

Self-Propelled

Many full-size lawnmowers are heavy and pretty tough to move. The Snapper XD features a nifty self-propel mechanism that assists you when pushing it around. Just depress the self-propel bar near the handle, and the motor applies some juice to the back wheels to keep them turning. This makes it much easier to push along your yard while mowing, and push it around when it’s not in use.

We should warn you though, the self-propel mechanism has some kick so it can be hard to manage if you’re not expecting it. Make sure you are firmly holding the lawnmower before you activate it or you may have a runaway lawnmower on your hands.

Lightweight

Lawnmowers are notorious for being one of the heavier pieces of lawn care equipment out there, so it’s nice to see that the Snapper shaved some pounds off that traditional design.

The entire Snapper weighs just a tad over 90 lbs, about 30 lbs less than most power lawn mowers with motors. The self-propel mechanism makes it feel even lighter when pushing it around.

The low weight and self-propel mechanism mean that it can be used by anyone, even older folks who may not be as spry as they were in their youth.

High Power Brushless Motor

Most older electric motors were brushed motors, meaning that they contain a small brush that flips the stators that create the magnetic field powering the motor. Brushless motors, in contrast, use an onboard computer to change the orientation of the fields to power the motor. Brushless motors have an efficiency anywhere between 85%-90% whereas brushed motor only operates at about 75%-80% efficiency.

The Snapper has a powerful 1200 watt brushless motor that is more precise and faster than brushless motors. Brushless motors also produce less noise, last longer, and are less likely to overheat, compared to brushed motors. Brushless motors do, however, tend to cost more, but this cost is usually offset by their efficiency and low maintenance requirements.

The high power brushless motor of the Snapper can easily handle 3”-6” tall grass without breaking a sweat, though it is noticeably louder than some electric motors out there.

Load Sensing Technology

To be honest, this is probably our favorite feature of the Snapper. The load sensing tech detects how thick the grass is and adjusts the power of the blades to follow suit. This saves on energy and makes the battery last longer as it’s not exerting its full effort all the time. It also makes it easier to mow in general because the blade power gets set to exactly how much you need.

Single Level Adjustment

We also like how it gives you the option to set the blades at 7 different lengths depending on the length of your lawn. If you want your lawn to be extra short, set it at the lowest blade setting, though it may be harder to push if your lawn is long and you’re trying to cut it as low as possible. We recommend going over the lawn once on a higher setting then switching to the lower level.

Choice of Batteries

The Snapper comes with 2 of the 2 Ah batteries, but you can buy larger 4 Ah and 5 Ah batteries if you want longer run times. The 2 Ah battery can get up to a full hour on a full charge, while the 4 and 5 Ah batteries can get up to an hour and a half and 2 hours respectively.

Despite the relatively low run times of the batteries, they charge very quickly. The 2 Ah batteries can charge to 50 percent in just 15 minutes while the 4 Ah and 5 Ah batteries can charge to 50 in 25 minutes and 37 minutes, respectively.

SNAPPER VS TORO PUSH MOWER COMPARISON & VERDICT!

If you want to learn more about cordless tool batteries, then we have an extensive guide here.

Run Time

Here is one category where the Snapper falls somewhat short. It can only get about an hour of full runtime off a fully charged 2 Ah battery, though you can attach two at the same time and it will switch when one runs out.

The 2 Ah batteries should give you enough juice to cover about 2,000 sq. feet of lawn. The 4 Ah and 5 Ah batteries give you more run time, but you cannot attach two of those at the same time.

Push Button Start Mechanism

Those who have older gas-powered lawnmowers will remember having to continually pull a cord to start it up. Not so with the Snapper.

The Snapper has a wonderful single push-button ignition system that makes it very easy to start. Just press the button once and you’ll hear it roar to life. No more wasting time and effort yanking on a long cord. One push and you’ll be good to go.
