Probably everyone who at least once carried out repair work with their own hands faced the problem of cutting out the outer and inner corners of the ceiling plinth. Ceiling skirting board, also called fillet, is used in repairs in order to hide the uneven border between the wall and the ceiling and to give the interior completeness. How to cut a corner of a skirting board without a miter box? We will talk about this in our article.

How to cut a ceiling plinth in the corners without a miter box? If you don’t have a miter box on hand, it doesn’t matter. You can cut the outer and inner corner without a miter box.

Fillets on the market today are available in different sizes, shapes and colors, with and without relief patterns. The material from which they are made is also different. These are mainly: polyurethane, expanded polystyrene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride. But recently, the most popular in the repair work has become a wooden ceiling plinth. Its aesthetic appearance allows you to add elegance and rigor to the design of the room.

Which skirting board is better?

Before you cut the corners correctly on the ceiling plinth, you need to choose the right one.

Tip: the ceiling plinth will look harmonious if its width is selected correctly. The higher the walls, the wider the skirting board should be.

The most durable, moisture resistant and elastic are polyurethane fillets and cutting a corner from such a ceiling plinth is not very easy. However, all these positive qualities are “covered” by one significant drawback. they do not withstand sudden changes in temperature, which does not allow them to be used in all rooms.

For example, in a kitchen where there is a gas or electric stove, polyurethane fillets will retain their original appearance for about a week. After that, with frequent cooking, when hot air rises to the ceiling, then falls, they will begin to deform, spoiling the whole “picture”.

Skirting boards made from other materials also have their drawbacks.

For example, products made of polyvinyl chloride have increased electrostaticity and if dents appear on their surface during operation, it will be impossible to remove them. At the slightest mechanical impact, ceiling skirting boards made of expanded polystyrene and polystyrene break.

If we talk about which ceiling plinth for stretch ceilings or ordinary ceilings is better, then the exact answer here, probably, will not be possible. Since each of them has its own positive and negative qualities. Therefore, you still have to make a choice, starting from the financial resources that you have, and on the conditions under which the fillet will be operated.

How to cut corners without a miter box?

At first glance, it seems that cutting the corner of the ceiling plinth is not difficult. cut the edges of the plinths at an angle of 45 degrees and glued them. However, this is not at all the case. Each corner of the room can differ in its parameters, for example, one 90 degrees, the other 88 or 92.

This difference is the norm, especially in buildings over 30 years old. Therefore, if you simply cut the skirting board at an angle of 45 degrees and glue it on the border between the ceiling and the wall, a gap may form that should not be there. How to dock the ceiling plinth so that there are no gaps? So, let’s begin.

First you need to prepare a tool that will trim the edges of the skirting boards. This can be a metal saw or a regular sharp knife.

How to cut the inner corner of a skirting board without a miter box? The answer lies on the surface.

Take a skirting board and attach it to the corner in the same way as you will glue it. Using a pencil, draw a line along the baseboard on the ceiling. Remove the fillet.

We carry out the first step. Photo 2

Place the second skirting board on the other side of the corner where it meets the first. Follow the same procedure as with the first one. As a result, you should have the markup.

Take the plinth, lean it tightly against the place to which you will glue, and transfer to it the point of contact of the two straight lines drawn earlier on the ceiling. From this point, draw the line to the opposite edge of the baseboard. This line will be the cut point.

Attach the cut skirting boards to the corner. If the place of their joint has no gaps, you can start gluing the fillet. If there are gaps or irregularities, correct the cut corners with a knife.

How to cut the outer corner of a ceiling plinth? When creating an outer corner, the top should protrude above the bottom, the inner. the opposite is true.

Whatever ceiling you glue the plinth to, whether it is the ceiling in the bedroom or kitchen, do not rush, measure everything carefully. This will help you avoid spoiling the material.

Fillet cutting for inner corner

Internal corners are always present in rooms. so you will definitely have to face them when installing skirting boards on the ceiling. In this case, when cutting a baguette, we follow the algorithm:

  • we measure the required length of the workpiece by attaching it to the ceiling at the place of future installation;
  • we place the bar in the miter box along the near wall so that its location coincides with how it will be mounted on the ceiling;
  • holding the plinth, we put the cutting tool in the groove with an inclination of 45 ° and cut the workpiece without unnecessary pressure;
  • we do the same actions in a mirror image for the second, adjacent bar. For the convenience of cutting, you can turn the miter box with the bar installed in it to the desired hand.

Knowing how to correctly cut out the inner corner on the ceiling plinth with a miter box, you can easily arrange more complex ones. outer corners.

Materials for ceiling plinths

Ceiling moldings can be of different widths, have a convex pattern on the front side and special recesses for engineering systems on the back side. Fillets are made in specialized production from polystyrene, its varieties. expanded polystyrene, polyurethane and wood.

Polyfoam is the most affordable finishing material. Its positive qualities: light weight, ease of cutting and processing, the possibility of finishing by painting in any color. Negative point. granularity and low strength. even a slight mechanical damage can violate the integrity of the foam surface.

Varieties of foam plinth Foam plinth on the ceiling

Expanded polystyrene is a more durable type of foam. It is also light in weight and in processing, but it has a higher density and a smooth surface, is more resistant to mechanical damage, and lends itself well to staining. These two materials, due to their low weight, have little stress on the load-bearing walls.

Wood is the hardest and most impact-resistant of all fillet materials. Products made from it retain their appearance longer and are able to withstand significant mechanical stress. In the style of some interiors, it is wooden friezes that are most applicable. Wood ennobles the room and fills it with warmth. However, it has a higher price than previous materials.

Different types of baguettes made of wood Wooden fillet in the interior

Products made of polystyrene, as well as expanded polystyrene, have an advantage over wood. The softness of the material makes it possible to press the baguette as tightly as possible against the wall, ceiling and each other. therefore, there are no gaps. It is possible to achieve excellent joining of the plinth on not perfectly flat walls if you use a not wide foam or expanded polystyrene fillet.

Trim skirting in miter box

The miter box is one of the most important tools when processing a baguette, allowing you to make cuts on the skirting board with the desired slope for an even joint. Consider the features of working with fillets using this device.

To correctly and evenly cut the ceiling plinth using a miter box in the corners, you must follow certain rules.

  • Cutting workpieces with a miter box is only suitable for right angles equal to 90 °.
  • When cutting a baguette intended for the ceiling, it is applied and sawn on the inner side of the miter box closest to you.
  • The workpiece is installed in such a position as it will be mounted later on the ceiling.
  • Cutting is carried out on the front side of the baguette.
  • The side that is subsequently glued to the ceiling must press firmly against the bottom of the tray when cutting.
  • It is recommended to use a specific cutting tool for each type of material: a hacksaw or knives are good for cutting soft materials such as foam, a saw is preferable for wood.

Outside Corner With Baseboard-EASY Tutorial

Ceiling corners can be internal and external, or external, therefore there are differences in the preparation of the baguette, which consist in the methods of joining the planks and different inclination of the cuts. To make it easier to work with the miter box, it is useful to make visual prompts on it in the form of small stickers with inscriptions, as shown below.

Miter box with tips for easier work Angle types

The main attention should be paid to the accuracy of cutting workpieces at the desired angle. It is recommended to start working from the inner corner and then work to the outer corner. Otherwise, it is possible that the length of the baguette will not be enough. Schematically, the cutting steps look like the figures below.

How to properly cut a corner on a ceiling plinth

Ceiling plinth, also known as fillet, frieze or baguette, is a finishing material that is used at the final stage of renovating a room. At the same time, it not only masks possible irregularities of the upper edge of the wallpaper or peeling of plaster near the ceiling, but also acts as a decorative element, giving completeness and uniqueness to the space.

Ceiling plinth with internal and external corners

Many people install the ceiling frieze in their apartment on their own, without involving masters. This job is not that difficult if you know how to choose the tools and cut the corner correctly on the skirting board. The main thing when working with a ceiling molding:

  • take into account the peculiarity of the material from which the fillet is made;
  • have the right tools and use them correctly;
  • know the intricacies of step-by-step work.

Skirting tools

When installing friezes, you need to prepare the necessary tools to perfectly cut the skirting board and fit the ceiling frieze to the corners of the room. To trim the baguette, a miter box and cutting tools are used: knives (carpentry and ordinary), hacksaws, saws. When handling each of them, it is necessary to take into account the features of the device and the subtleties of application.

The miter box is a device that guides the cutting tool blade with the required inclination. It is specially designed for cutting materials that are then mounted at a specific angle. Structurally, it can be conventional and tilt-rotary, or precision. They are visually different, but the principle of operation is the same.

Different types of miter boxes Plastic miter boxes with clamps

An ordinary miter box is a U-shaped tray made most often of plastic. It also comes in metal or wood. There are slots in its walls for guiding the cutting tool at a given angle to the base. This variety has a template type and cannot be adjusted: the material is cut at standard angles (normal or negative), which are structurally embedded in the grooves. When choosing a miter box, you need to look so that it should be wider than the workpiece for cutting. To fix the material in the device, a clamp or special pins can be used. if the structure has perforations for their installation. Usually, the workpieces in it are simply adhered to with the free hand.

Plain plastic miter box Plain wooden miter box

Swivel, or precision miter box. adjusting to any angle of inclination, allows you to cut at an angle and get a simultaneous cut in two planes at once. It is a professional tool that is rarely used under normal conditions.

Swivel miter box with hacksaw Precision (swivel) miter box

Saw. Recommended mainly for hard wood skirting boards. Using the saw on soft materials such as styrofoam and polystyrene is not always good. The cut from the saw turns out to be rough and requires additional grinding with sandpaper or a file.

A hacksaw is a widely used cutting tool for cutting a baguette. It is necessary to carefully approach its choice: the canvas must correspond to the size of the slots of the miter box. be of sufficient thickness and width. When working with a hacksaw, it is necessary to observe the inclination of the tool so as not to damage the miter box and observe the correct direction. At the same time, the cut of the part often turns out to be not very smooth and sometimes requires alignment and grinding.

Construction knife. makes it easy to cut soft foam fillet. It is not difficult for them to work, and the cut turns out to be even and smooth. Instead of a construction knife, it is permissible to use an ordinary knife. the main thing is that it is of sufficient sharpness and length.

Fillet cutting for outer corner

Outside corners in a room are not so common, but they require particularly careful cutting of fillets and precise joining of their sides. Unlike the internal ones, small gaps in the external ones are more noticeable and difficult to hide. You also need to take into account some peculiarities when working with external corners. It’s easy to do, following certain rules:

  • parts of the frieze should protrude slightly from the edge of the wall, forming a small margin;
  • we measure the bar by attaching it to the ceiling as it will be glued in the future;
  • we place the frieze in the miter box, pressing it against the wall closest to you;
  • we insert a hacksaw or other suitable cutting tool into a groove with an angle of 45 °, and cut off the workpiece without unnecessary pressure;

The location of the left outer strap in the miter box

  • we put the adjacent bar to the nearest wall of the miter box and, holding it, insert a hacksaw or other tool into the groove at an angle of 45 °. For the convenience of work, we unfold the miter box with the blank “under the arm”;
  • we do the same as in the previous case. carefully and evenly cut the fillet.

It remains to join the cut baguette strips and check the cutting accuracy. Taking the cut pieces of the baguette in pairs, we join them, forming an inner or outer corner. If the cutting of the planks was carried out accurately and accurately, then the edges of the adjacent planks will ideally coincide with each other.

In the presence of small irregularities and roughness, it is allowed to work on them with a sharp knife, clean them with a file or emery paper fixed on a bar.

Following all the rules and principles of working with special tools when preparing fillets, you can easily install any ceiling skirting boards yourself.

How to cut the corner of a baguette correctly. Using a laser level

In modern conditions, many home craftsmen already have in their instrumental “arsenal”, which are excellent for checking the straightness of the angle, and marking the baguette when forming both internal and external corners.

How this is done is described step by step in the following instruction table.

Illustration Brief description of the operation to be performed
First, you need to accurately position the laser level itself.
For this, the same distance, for example, 500 mm, is laid from the corner along the lines of the floor and wall joint. The marked points are connected by a diagonal line.
After that, they find and outline its middle.
The laser level is installed on the floor, turned on, and then placed so that the vertical plane specified by it (its projection in the form of a line) passes through the middle marked on the diagonal and coincides with the corner of the room. The beam should pass vertically along the mowing line of the corner. this will at the same time show how evenly the corner of the room is formed.
In fact, a plane is set that cuts the corner of the room exactly in the center. It is in this plane that the joint of the skirting boards should be located.
In this case, the level should be located so that the projection of this plane is also displayed on the ceiling.
You can fix the resulting bisecting line with pencil marks. But even better. do not remove the device, since it will help to more accurately display the desired cutting line and on the plinth attached to the place of future fastening.
Probably, it is clear that the next step is to install one baguette at the installation site. The plank must be resting with the end side against the wall. The beam from the laser builder, passing along the surface of the plinth, and even along all its embossed protrusions, will accurately show the cut line.
After that, along the mowing line of the beam, with the help of a pencil or a thin marker, the cutting line is outlined.
Using a knife, a corner is cut along the intended mowing line. in this case it is impossible to make a mistake.
Then, in the same way, the mowing line of the cut is marked and the second plinth is cut.
Now that both parts for forming the corner are ready, they need to be connected to each other at the place of future fixing.
If the joint is neat, then you can mount the baguette with glue.
If a small gap has formed between the planks, then the ends of the plinth must be corrected with a knife.
When installing the ceiling plinth, the strips that form the corner are first glued, and the flat trims are fixed last.
If, when carrying out the approximate alignment of the corner side of the baguette, its other end will find on the already fixed segment of the plinth, you should immediately mark the required length in order to cut off its excess.
In this case, the straight edge is trimmed just at right angles.
To correctly cut the baguette for the outer corner, it is also necessary to start marking from the floor using a laser level.
There is a slight difference in the primary build here.
At first, mowing lines are simply drawn along the ruler, which are a continuation of the walls. Then an equal distance is laid on them from the corner, these points are connected by a diagonal, on which the center is determined.
The beam is directed through this mark to the protruding angle, also with the projection of this plane on the surface of the ceiling.
Further, segments of the baguette are alternately applied to the wall and the protruding corner so that the beam passes through them.
Marking is carried out along the mowing line of the projection, and then the end part of the skirting board is cut.
After that, it is necessary to try on both segments at the installation site, aligning the sections. If necessary, the ends of the strips are adjusted.
If everything is fine, proceed to fixing the fillets on the surface.

Popular materials

Ceiling plinth

A ceiling molding, aka molding, fillet, curb or just a plinth, is most often used to finish the joint between the wall and the ceiling. Although sometimes it is used to cover internal corners, make decorative frames or panels, decorate niches and architectural elements. There are several of the most popular materials for making ceiling moldings:

Plastic (polyvinyl chloride). It is more convenient to cut wide and rigid moldings with a hacksaw for metal. If you need a more gentle tool, use a jigsaw.

Foam (expanded polystyrene). A very lightweight and porous material that is best cut with a sharp utility or utility knife.

Wooden baguettes. Suitable for cutting are helical saws specially designed for baguettes. You can also use hand or jigsaws.

In the instructions on how to glue the ceiling plinth and cut the corner, there are four important sections.

  • Connection of skirting boards in the inner corner, which has 90 o.
  • Cutting the ends of the fillet for the outer corner.
  • Docking baguette in acute and obtuse corners.
  • Ceiling plinth fixation technology in the corners.

How to cut the corners of a skirting board with a miter box. How to cut a corner of a ceiling plinth using a miter box

The miter box is a simple carpentry tool that allows you to cut the workpiece at the desired angle. Most often it is a plastic, wood or metal tray with vertical slots for cutting at an angle of 90 ° and 45 °. There are also more complex miter box designs. for cutting at angles of 90, 60 and 45 degrees. For more professional work, a miter box with a swivel mechanism is used, where the hacksaw can be fixed at any angle to the workpiece.

How to cut a skirting board with a miter box. inner corner:

  • We apply the plinth to the ceiling, measure the required length.
  • Then we install the plinth strip in the miter box so that the position coincides with the position of the plinth on the ceiling.
  • The plinth strip must be pressed against the far wall of the miter box.
  • Hold the plinth with your left hand.
  • We choose such a position of the hacksaw when the angle is 45 degrees and at the same time the handle of the hacksaw is as close as possible to the left hand.
  • We cut the workpiece without making excessive pressure on the saw.
  • The next step is to trim the plinth striker. We also install it to the far wall of the miter box.
  • Press and hold with your right hand.
  • We choose such a position for the hacksaw when the angle is 45 degrees and the handle of the hacksaw approaches the right hand.
  • Cut off the skirting board.

Next, we join the trimmed plinths and check the cutting accuracy. For a more accurate orientation, they also say that in order to complete the inner corner, it is necessary to start cutting from the front of the skirting board. After cutting, wooden skirting boards will most likely have to be adjusted with a file.

How to cut a ceiling plinth with a miter box. outside corner:

  • In order not to be mistaken with the dimensions, it is better to start by marking the inner corner, and then cut out the outer corner. Otherwise, a situation is possible when the planks may not be enough in length.
  • It is necessary to attach the plank to the ceiling and outline the dimensions.
  • Install the plinth strip and press it against the nearest wall.
  • Hold with your left hand and choose a position for the hacksaw at an angle of 45 degrees, when the handle approaches the left hand.
  • Cut off the workpiece.
  • We install the striker to the nearest wall, hold it with the right hand.
  • We set the hacksaw at a 45 degree angle when the handle approaches the right hand.
  • Cut off the workpiece and join the corner.

Trimming the workpiece with a miter box is only suitable if the angle between the walls is even. 90 degrees. If the accuracy is poor, you will have to use other methods.

Floor plinth

A modern skirting board is hardly a gap bridging strip. It is a constructive component that complements the design and enhances the overall look. Skirting boards are made from several materials:

Wooden ones can be made from solid wood or veneer. For trimming, use flat or circular saws, jigsaws.

Plastic skirting boards are dangerous competitors to traditional wood. Easy to install and cut with an ordinary hacksaw for metal.

Aluminum skirting boards are the latest in interior design. Cut usually with a saw or hand saw for metal.

Only on wooden skirting boards will you have to make a corner trim. The rest are cut evenly and connected using special corners.

Making an external joint

In apartments or houses, there are not only internal corners, but also external ones. In this case, the nearest inner corner is first trimmed and modified. When it’s ready, you can make an outside corner on the baseboard. We put the bar in the corner, as it should be. In the place of the outer corner with a pencil, we make a mark exactly at the place of rotation.

How to make the outer corner of the skirting board

Then we transfer the bar to the miter box, choose the appropriate position. In order not to be mistaken, all the time imagine how the plinth is against the wall and what you should get.

We cut the second segment at 45 degrees so that it joins the finished one. To do this, we change the position of the saw to the opposite and start the plinth on the other side.

Types of corners in rooms

When installing skirting boards, you need to arrange the corners in some way. By their appearance, the corners are external (which protrude forward) and internal (for example, corners in a room). In rooms with normal geometry, the corners are straight, i.e. 90 °. When joining two pieces of the plinth strip in the corner, they are cut so that each has an angle of 45 °.

To arrange the outer and inner corner, the skirting board must be cut

But how to make an angle on the plinth so that it is exactly forty-five degrees? To do this, use a special carpentry tool. miter box.

Miter box for skirting boards

A carpenter’s miter box is a device for cutting at a certain angle. It is used with a hacksaw. In principle, you can make a miter box yourself by assembling a guide from the boards and making cuts in the walls. There are various models on sale ranging from 15 to several hundred dollars. They differ in capabilities, materials, although all are called “miter box”. Professional models are made on the basis of a good hacksaw, have a scale that allows you to set the saw as it should. With such a tool, it is not a problem to set any desired cutting angle in order to correctly cut the skirting board for a perfect fit.

Professional carpentry miter box. a tool with a wide range

The simplest miter box is a plastic U-shaped profile, in the walls of which slots are formed. These slots are used as a hacksaw guide. They do not allow the canvas to deviate. In any case, there are two cuts. straight and at 45 degrees. Some may have a couple more options.

How to cut a plinth at 45 degrees? One way is to use a miter box

Sometimes a hacksaw is included, sometimes not. Usually the ones included are not very good. Any hacksaw can be used, picking up the blade for the material that is planned to be cut. It is important that the blade moves freely in the slots.

How to make a skirting angle more or less than 90 °

Not all angles are exactly 90 degrees. If the deviation is small, the cracks can be removed with sandpaper. In other cases, you will have to mark and cut taking into account the real degree. The main task in this case is to find a point on the floor where two plinths will join.

Let’s start by explaining how to properly slice the outside corner if it’s not 90 degrees. We take the bar, put it to the corner on one side, press it tightly against the wall. as it should stand. Draw a line on the floor with a pencil along the bottom edge of the plinth. We apply the bar to the other side of the corner, do the same. The intersection of the two lines will be the joining point of the two skirting boards.

How to join a skirting board if the angle is less than or more than 90 degrees

Now we attach the plinth strip again, set it in the way it will be attached. We make two marks: at the top at the turn itself, at the bottom in the place where the lines we draw intersect. Now an important task: it is necessary to make a cut according to these marks. If you have a miter saw or a miter box with an adjustable saw tilt, set it up and cut it. If not, carefully cut it with a hacksaw. In order not to get lost, you can use a pencil to apply the fishing line along which you need to cut. Similarly, mark and cut off the second part. Modifying the connection of the skirting boards with sandpaper.

Few of the professionals process the joints with sandpaper. this is time and additional work. But if you join skirting boards in the corners in your own house, with your own hands, you definitely want everything to be beautiful. This is what this manual tweak is for.

The inside corner of the custom size is exactly the same. We put a plinth in the corner, draw a straight line on the floor. We do it on the other side. Transfer the point of intersection to the planks.

How to cut the skirting board correctly. Miter box for cutting corners

When installing skirting boards, it is important to arrange the corners correctly. It is they who often spoil the overall picture. How to make a corner on the plinth. external and internal, how and with what to cut. We will discuss all this further.

How to saw down the corner of the plinth at the right distance

The second and all other corners of the skirting boards must be made at a certain distance. If the next corner is again internal and the distance to it is less than the length of the plank, use the same fragment on which there is already a cut. We measure the distance with a tape measure. strictly from corner to corner. Then this distance is laid on the bar using the same tape measure. We combine the beginning of the measuring tape with the ledge, measure the required distance, make a mark with a pencil. She will be the starting point for the cut.

You need to know at what distance to cut

Plinth with a mark is placed in the miter box, the desired direction of the cut is chosen. The dash can be combined with a hacksaw blade or with a slot in the miter box. As it is convenient for anyone. Cut off. This segment must be “tried on” in place. If both corners rest against opposite walls or the gap is only 1 mm, everything is fine. You can cut a second strip from a new piece to design a joint. And again we remove the flaws with sandpaper.

If the length of the wall is longer than the length of the plinth plinth, take a new plank. We will cut the second corner on it. It is important not to be mistaken in which direction to cut. Having installed both planks along the wall, mark the joint on one of them, make a straight cut. For a straight cut, there are also slots in the miter box. So there won’t be any problems.

How to connect two skirting boards in a straight line

But the joint in a straight line does not always look perfect, and during operation it often diverges, forming a visible gap. If you wish, you can cut off at an angle (any) two planks.

To do this, first cut off the edge of one plank at an angle, mark the second joint. The mark is placed on the side of the plinth that is pressed against the wall. At this mark, we saw off another section, without changing the position of the saw relative to the miter box, but inserting the bar on the other side. The joint is oblique. It is more accurate. The difference is especially visible on wooden skirting boards and MDF. Cut, again, bring “to mind” with sandpaper.

The first joint in the room

The first plinth should be cut as close to the edge as possible. Carpenters have their own jargon and they say “cut” the corner. It does not matter what you call it, it is important that in the miter box we set the bar so as to make a cut at the very beginning. For the cutting line, we push the bar a short distance, for a start, you can 1-2 cm. Cutting a smaller piece is more difficult, so save the savings “for later” when at least some skill appears.

In the miter box, place the plinth at the far wall “facing” you. This makes it easier to check if you are cutting / sawing correctly.

Then you need to make a corner on the plinth like this:

  • We put the plinth in the miter box, press it against the wall opposite to us. We expose it in the mounting position. how it will stand against the wall.
  • Insert the hacksaw into the desired slots (see the picture below).
  • Move the bar so that it goes slightly beyond the cut line.
  • Cut off.
  • We take the second piece of plinth, repeat the same operations, but change the position of the saw on the miter box to the opposite. We insert the bar on the other side. Be careful here, otherwise you will have to redo it several times, since the connection will not work.

How to properly cut a floor plinth in a miter box: for external and internal joint

We got two pieces cut for joining in the inner corner. To make the joint perfect, we try on the details in place. Most likely there are some flaws. We take sandpaper with medium grain, remove everything that interferes with docking. Then, with small grain, we achieve a tight joint without cracks and gaps.

When joining the skirting boards in the corner, use a transparent silicone sealant. Before installing the fasteners, a layer of silicone is applied to the cut. Immediately after the plinth is fixed, we remove the excess that appeared on the outside. We clean up to an absolutely clean surface. This way of connecting the skirting boards in the corners looks more neat, dirt and dust does not clog into it.

How to cut the skirting board in the inner corners: action plan step by step

Begin installing the skirting boards in one of the corners. If this is your first experience, choose the part of the room where something will stand. Not always, it’s over, the first pancake is lumpy, but it’s still better to insure yourself. To make the corner on the baseboard neatly, work slowly. One was sawed off, checked, adjusted. Let’s move on to the next one. It is better to fix it after the two adjacent corners are assembled. But you should not postpone the assembly too much.

Trimming skirting boards in corners requires some skill. But by making several joints yourself, you can beautifully design complex corners.

How to use a miter box to cut skirting boards? Place the device in front of you, preferably on a table, but also on the floor. It doesn’t matter which side to turn it, it is symmetrical. Insert the bar into the profile, turn it so that it will stand against the wall. When washing down a floor plinth in a miter box, the “wall” is the wall that is farther from you. Once again: press the plinth strip firmly against the back wall in the position in which it will be installed. Insert a hacksaw into the desired slots. You can start sawing.

Manufacturing material and name

The first material from which they began to make plinths for decorating ceilings was gypsum. They had to be cast in special molds, after which they were attached to the ceiling using plaster mortar. Such decorative elements were called fillets and nowadays they are practically not used, but you can see them in old houses, which have practically not survived during this time. These are expensive elements of finishing the premises, so no one uses them today, and their name is practically unknown to anyone. Today there are cheaper and more practical skirting boards for finishing ceilings.

Nowadays, ceiling skirting boards are made from materials such as polystyrene or polyurethane. These are inexpensive decorative elements that differ in a number of advantages associated with ease of installation, practicality and attractiveness, as well as “weightlessness”, in comparison with plaster trim elements, which have an impressive weight. Such skirting boards made of polyurethane or polystyrene are made of various widths (from 5 to 250 mm), and also have a wide range of shapes and patterns, so it is possible to choose such decorative elements for any style of decoration. The only exceptions are buildings made of wood, decorated in the appropriate style, where elements from wood are taken as a basis and nothing can be done about it, since the style always dictates its own conditions.

There are also plastic skirting boards that are not afraid of moisture, so they are used to decorate rooms in which there is high humidity. At the same time, for the sake of justice, it should be noted that decorative elements made of polystyrene are also not afraid of moisture.

Ceiling skirting boards are adjusted in corners using some methods, while such options are not suitable for trimming plastic skirting boards.

Used tools

Depending on the material of manufacture, various tools are used to adjust the skirting boards: when working with wooden skirting boards, use a hacksaw for wood, and when working with plastic or polyurethane skirting boards, it is better to use a hacksaw for metal. Styrofoam decor elements are easily cut with an ordinary, sharp clerical knife. In most cases, a miter box is used, which allows you to cut the plinth evenly at a certain angle. If a hacksaw is used for metal, then you should not press hard, since the cut may turn out to be uneven, with burrs, and the material can be crumpled and unusable. Polystyrene and polyurethane ceiling skirting boards must be handled with care.

If there is no experience with such tools, as well as decorative elements, it is better to take a small piece of finishing material and practice with different pressing forces, which will help in solving the problem in the future.

How to properly fit the skirting boards in the corners

As a rule, the design of corners, both internal and external, takes up the bulk of the time. Due to the fact that ceiling skirting boards are characterized by a very complex shape, it is not so easy to take and cut them at the right angle. It is necessary to cut so that they dock in the corner without noticeable gaps. There are several ways to make the angles literally perfect.

How to make the corner of the ceiling plinth

Modern interior decoration of residential and non-residential premises has risen to a completely different level. Everyone strives to ensure that the premises are beautiful. Many, in order not to spend extra money, make repairs of apartments or individual rooms on their own. Without a ceiling plinth, the work seems unfinished, so the installation of a ceiling plinth is considered mandatory, the final stage of finishing the room. For a layman, the main problem is trimming and adjusting the ceiling plinths in the corners, while on a flat surface, fastening is quite simple.

Using a miter box

The miter box, as a tool, is suitable if the corners in the room are mated at an angle of 90 degrees. The tool represents the groove, in the form of the letter “U”, turned upside down. Cuts were made on the walls of the gutter at different angles. In order to evenly cut off the decor element, it is laid inside the gutter, after which the element is cut off with a hacksaw at the desired angle.

This is what the miter box looks like. Can be plastic, wood or metal

Due to the fact that the skirting boards are complex in shape, they must be laid in the groove so that they simultaneously press against two surfaces. the bottom and the side. Depending on which corner is formed, the plinth is pressed against the bottom and side, either the opposite or near surface.

Typically, corners are trimmed at 45 degrees. First of all, you need to decide on the length of the plinth, putting certain marks on it. After that, the decor element is placed in the miter box so that the mark corresponds to the maximum length of the element, after which the element is cut off. It must also be remembered that the left side of the plinth fits on the left side of the miter box, and the right side on the right.

How to cut a corner on a ceiling plinth: install it correctly in a miter box

Ceiling skirting boards are attached to the ceiling on one side and to the wall on the other, so the part that is attached to the ceiling fits on the lower surface of the miter box. It is very important to hold the plinth firmly and securely during the cutting process, as otherwise the cut surface is unlikely to be flat and smooth. By cutting off the left and right parts in this way, you get either an inner or an outer corner.

How to cut an external mitre / outside corner on skirting boards / baseboards.

First, both parts are applied to the attachment point without glue to check the quality of the work. If the angles do not match, then they are corrected with a suitable tool. The advantage of polystyrene ceiling skirting boards is that small errors can be hidden by covering them with putty.

After the final check, a thin layer of special glue is applied to both surfaces of the skirting board.

The technique for fitting skirting boards in the corners is almost the same, regardless of whether it is an internal or external corner. After applying the glue, the plinth is pressed against both the wall and the ceiling. Naturally, the effort must be controlled, especially if the decorative elements are made of foam. over, you need to work with gloves so as not to gloss over the surface of the skirting boards, which gets dirty easily.
