Lawn mower work table. Adjustable Work Station Lifts for Lawn Mower Assembly

Adjustable Work Station Lifts for Lawn Mower Assembly

Workstation lift with adjustable height variations improve worker ergonomics.

Project Challenge

John Deere challenged themselves to reduce floor space consumption and improve overall productivity of their assembly lines producing riding lawn mowers. The current method of driving the mower up a ramp to a fixed-height assembly table consumed too much valuable floor space and failed to place the assembly work at optimum ergonomic work heights for all employees. Autoquip was challenged to provide a material handling solution that would improve work station ergonomics and factory throughput in less square footage.

Our Solution

Assembly stations are benefited from a solution that provides any given operator the means to make incremental adjustments in elevation to the product being assembled. A hydraulic lift was recommended as the most cost-efficient method of providing adjustments in elevation in order to keep the welded product at an optimum, ergonomic work height. In addition, Autoquip also recommended that the lift be mounted in a recessed pit in order for the top of the lift platform to be level with the production floor when completely lowered. This way the mowers can be rolled from the previous assembly station onto this final assembly lift without the necessity of and added floor space required for an approach ramp. The customer is completely satisfied with this workstation improvement, and worker productivity has improved as a result of keeping the work more nearly within the ergonomic “power zone” of each of the assemblers.

Lift Specifications for this Application:

Lift/Turn Capacity: 2,500 lbs.

Platform: 54″ x 88″ with beveled toe guards

The Results

Through the addition of a pit-mounted hydraulic lift, the final assembly workstation has been cost-efficiently updated to include a vital worker productivity improvement, and a reduction in consumption of valuable factory floor space.

Best EGO Lawn Mower Reviews 2023

We had the pleasure of testing the very first EGO LM2001 battery-powered lawn mower way back in 2014. Since then, they’ve expanded their lineup significantly and stayed at the front of the pack when it comes to competing in the best battery-powered mower game.

While the top of their current lineup of more than a dozen mowers finds its way near the top of the price list (at least for residential models), they also have a couple of value solutions if you’re buying an EGO lawn mower on a tighter budget. Overall, they do a nice job of hitting the entire spectrum of customer needs.

EGO 56V ArcLithium Battery Technology

EGO runs on a 14-cell system that produces 56 volts. While their 2.0Ah and 2.5Ah batteries are the go-to for EGO’s string trimmers and hedge trimmers, it’s the 5.0Ah and 7.5Ah packs that we prefer to use for lawn mowers. 1 battery can typically cover lawns up to a 1/4 acre and two batteries can cover a 1/2 acre or more.

For even larger properties, consider going with the 10Ah or 12Ah battery.

One thing that separates EGO from other cordless mower options is its battery design. The cells inside match the curved pack design and help cool the pack more effectively. Each cell also has a phase-change coating that helps cool them faster.

Batteries with Some Real-World Testing

When we test cordless lawn mowers down here in central Florida, the batteries tend to heat up quickly between the heat and tougher St. Augustine and Bahia grass species. Those that make it through their full battery discharge without reaching thermal shutdown need a break before the chargers deem it safe to charge them.

All except for EGO. Even when we put their newest mowers through some brutally tough testing on a sod farm, the batteries we used immediately started charging, putting them back in the game hours before other brands in some cases.

The other good news is that EGO runs their entire line on 56V batteries—even their zero-turn mowers. If you want to start by buying an EGO lawn mower and upgrade to a different model later, the batteries will work with it.

lawn, mower, work, table, adjustable

The same goes if you want to add other lawn care equipment, such as a string trimmer, hedge trimmer, or blower. They’re the same batteries that run the Nexus Power Station in case you’re looking for a battery-powered inverter.

All that said, we recommend the entire line, though each model fits a different user. Choosing the right model for your needs and expectations is key to having the best experience.

EGO Lawn Mower Models New for 2023

EGO’s lineup was already impressive, but they added at least five models in 2023, including another riding mower. Collectively, they bracket the market well and give consumers lots of additional options.

EGO 56V 42-Inch Zero-Turn Lawn Mower with E-Steer ZT4205S

EGO’s next-generation riding lawn mower takes the 42-inch Z6 concept and exchanges the lap bars for a steering wheel. It also shifts the controls from the operator’s right side and puts them on the steering wheel. If the idea of a zero-turn mower sounds appealing but the controls are a bit intimidating, this model is a great way to make the transition.

The kit includes four 12.0Ah batteries that can run the mower long enough to cut up to 2.5 acres. There are six total battery slots, so you can add more packs if you need longer runtime.

  • 22HP gas engine equivalent
  • 42-inch deck
  • E-Steer control system
  • 6 active battery ports
  • Cuts up to 2.5 acres with the included four 12.0Ah batteries

EGO LM2167SP 21-Inch Select Cut XP with Speed IQ

Taking over for the Select Cut XP, EGO’s innovative self-propelled mower is getting a drive update that they’re calling Speed IQ. This technology digitally senses and adapts the mower’s speed to your stride. You don’t have to worry about adjusting knobs or dials, just grab the presence bar and go.

Combining that with the stacked blade system, blade options, and 8.3 ft-lbs of torque from the original Select Cut XP, the LM2167SP will be EGO’s flagship self-propelled lawn mower moving forward.

The kit includes a 12.0Ah battery that EGO tells us will run the mower for up to 90 minutes.

  • Speed IQ self-propelled drive
  • 21-inch poly deck
  • Brushless motor
  • 8.3 ft-lbs of torque
  • Stacked blade Select Cut system
  • Single-point height adjustment
  • Vertical storage
  • 90-minute runtime with kitted 12.0Ah battery

EGO LM2125SP 21-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower with Touch Drive

Stepping down in price, EGO’s LM2125SP stands in the middle of the self-propelled mower lineup. This model uses EGO’s Touch Drive dial system for its self-propelled control and features a solid 6.0 ft-lbs of torque. With the 7.5 Ah battery that comes in the kit, you can expect up to an hour of runtime.

  • Touch Drive self-propelled drive
  • 21-inch poly deck
  • Brushless motor
  • 6.0 ft-lbs of torque
  • Single-point height adjustment
  • Vertical storage
  • 60-minute runtime with kitted 7.5Ah battery

Price: 649 kit with 7.5Ah battery

EGO LM2114SP 21-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

EGO’s LM2114SP is poised to take over as the value leader for the self-propelled line. Shifting to a dual-bar drive engagement system you can operate with either hand, it has the same 6.0 ft-lbs of torque as the Touch Drive model. The kit comes with a 6.0Ah battery that’s capable of 50 minutes of runtime.

  • Dual bar self-propelled mower
  • 21-inch poly deck
  • Brushless motor
  • 6.0 ft-lbs of torque
  • Single-point height adjustment
  • Vertical storage
  • 50-minute runtime with kitted 6.0Ah battery

Price: 449 kit with 6.0Ah battery

EGO LM2114 56V 21-Inch Push Lawn Mower

Take the model above, remove the self-propelled drive, and you get EGO’s newest push mower. It shares the same 6.0 ft-lbs of torque along with all the other goodies. It comes with a 6.0Ah battery that can run up to 55 minutes in this model. This is the only model EGO specifically mentions coming with an advanced Gator blade.

  • Push mower
  • 21-inch poly deck
  • Brushless motor
  • 6.0 ft-lbs of torque
  • Single-point height adjustment
  • Vertical storage
  • 55-minute runtime with kitted 6.0Ah battery

Price: 449 kit with 6.0Ah battery

Best EGO Zero-Turn Lawn Mower

ZT5207L Z6 52-inch Zero-Turn Mower

Increasing the deck size of the original EGO ZT4204L zero-turn mower, the EGO ZT5207L 52-inch zero-turn keeps everything we love. This best EGO lawn mower article would be incomplete without it. We do appreciate the ease of use that comes with the 2023 E-Steer model with steering wheel, but you can’t deny the larger deck and familiar controls of this 52-inch ZT.

There’s a lot to like about this EGO 52-inch zero-turn. If we had to boil it down to a few key points, you’d get the following:

  • Fabricated deck
  • 6 x 12Ah batteries (for maximum runtime)
  • 8MPH top mowing speed
  • 4 acres on a single charge
  • Onboard charging of batteries
  • LED headlights/taillights
  • Smooth controls

For residential users looking to ditch gas, the EGO 52-inch zero-turn currently offers the most refined residential mowing solution on the market.

Price: 6,999 kit with six 12.0Ah batteries and charger. 5-year limited warranty.

Best EGO Walk-Behind Lawn Mower

LM2130SP Select Cut XP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

There’s no doubt in our minds that the EGO Select Cut XP mower is the top walk-behind model currently available. That’s not just in the EGO lineup, we think it’s the best of all the cordless residential lawn mowers.

It features a stacked blade system that only EGO currently has in the electric walk-behind sector. The “Select Cut” in the name is because you get two blade options that both come with the kit. One blade offers a quality cut with better runtime and the other optimizes mulching. With our grass growth rates, we use the mulching blade.

It’s not the most powerful or the most expensive in EGO’s line. However, there’s plenty of power available to even handle some overgrowth if the weather or vacation forces you to let your lawn go a few extra days. It also has a newly designed drive control system that we prefer over EGO’s other self-propelled models.

Estimated kit runtime: 60 minutes

Price: 799 kit with 10.0Ah battery and Rapid charger

Most Powerful EGO Lawn Mower

LM2142SP Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

When we tested gas and battery-powered lawn mowers side-by-side, we thought gas would easily exceed what any brand could do with a battery. The 21-inch EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled lawn mower shocked us by out-cutting every other mower we tested except for the Honda HRX-series and perhaps the EGO Select Cut XP. It also put some massive distance over several other commercial gas mowers.

Two active battery ports combine the power of two batteries. That lets you pack up to 24.0Ah of battery capacity on board and hit higher torque. If you have grass that grows 3 or more inches between cuts or is really thick, this is the EGO mower you should grab to give you the power you need for an even cut.

Estimated kit runtime: 80 minutes

Price: 799 kit with two 5.0Ah batteries and Rapid charger

Toughest EGO Lawn Mower

LM2021 Steel Deck Self-Propelled Mower

If you’re the kind of guy or gal that wants the toughest build, consider EGO’s steel deck mowers. We actually prefer the push model. It not only saves you money but also eliminates one more motor from the list of potential failure points.

The debate between steel and poly (plastic) decks runs deep. Generally speaking, steel decks can take more abuse. That said, we haven’t had a poly deck fail on us yet. There’s also more design flexibility to optimize airflow compared to steel.

But there’s still no denying that steel mower decks inspire a lot of confidence for the long haul. With EGO’s 5-year warranty backing it up, we’re totally on board with a steel deck sealing that long-term commitment.

Estimated kit runtime: 60 minutes

Price: 499 as a kit with 5.0Ah battery and charger

Best Value EGO Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

LM2114SP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

If you’re looking to save some money and still get a great self-propelled battery-powered lawn mower, the EGO LM2114SP 21-inch model is a great fit.

While more basic than the other models we mentioned above, it’s no slouch in the feature department. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Mulch, bag, or side discharge
  • Vertical storage
  • 21-inch poly deck
  • LED headlights
  • Single point height adjustment

The kit price with a 6.0Ah battery is 549—still less expensive than most self-propelled cordless mowers of this quality. Finding good value means balancing price, performance, and quality, and that’s what EGO does so well with this model compared to less expensive solutions.

Estimated kit runtime: 60 minutes

Price: 549 kit with 6.0Ah battery and charger

Best Value EGO Push Lawn Mower

LM2101 56V Push Mower

EGO’s 21-inch LM2101 push mower kit is one of the best values in the battery-powered lawn mower space, period. Running 399 for the kit with a 5.0Ah battery, it has the runtime to cover lawns up to a 1/4-acre on one charge.

Like its high-value self-propelled cousin, it keeps most of the best features from EGO’s foundational design:

  • Mulch, bag, or side discharge
  • Vertical storage
  • 21-inch poly deck
  • LED headlights
  • Single point height adjustment

While you may be skeptical that hitting such a high value mark leaves questionable performance, this is actually the first EGO lawn mower to exceed the power of entry-level gas mowers.

Estimated kit runtime: 45 minutes

Price: 429 (or less) kit with 5.0Ah battery and Rapid charger

1.Craftsman T225 19 HP Briggs Stratton Gold 46-Inch Gas-Powered Riding Mower

Craftsman is a brand that never fails to impress, and this product is just the cherry on top. They claim to deliver quality and efficiency. and this offers exactly that. With raving reviews and a top-notch build, there is no way this device won’t meet your expectations and be the best mower for rocky terrain you’ve ever experienced.

This gas riding lawn mower features a Briggs and Stratton gas engine. Briggs and Stratton make the best engines with a load of power. so we can say that the powerhouse of this Craftsman mower is a true beast.

It features a ready start option, so the operator won’t have to waste precious time trying to get the device running. Most riding lawn mowers take a long time to start, but the ready start feature frees you from all that trouble and lets the device start right up.

This zero-turn mower has a 46-inch deck, which is huge compared to other riding lawn mowers. This helps the mower deal with larger areas, making it good for home use but also commercial use, as it gets a large job done in a fraction of the time.

This device works extremely smoothly with its ability to clip grass in one quick sweep. Plus, it comes with a deck wash feature that saves time and keeps the underside of the mower clean.

If the deck’s underside remains uncleaned, residual grass clippings and other debris start to build up, which causes rust as well as a huge decline in the device’s value and capability to do the job. But with a deck wash feature, you can avoid all of that.

This equipment is equipped with foot hydrostatic transmission, which means it transits energy using hydraulic fluid. This automatic transmission can be extremely useful in maintaining and adjusting mower speeds.

This device is also capable enough to mow in reverse. which makes it easy to maneuver and comes extremely handy when mowing tough spots and rough terrains. With the mow-in-reverse feature, you’ll be able to tackle a rough spot in many directions, making sure that everything gets mowed perfectly.

Mowing can be a tough job, as it can take long hours of sitting in the same position and hours of fatigue and backache later. But not with the Craftsman mower, not at all! Craftsman made sure that the operator is comfortable riding it at all times, sitting in the high-back cushioned seat that provides optimum comfort. especially when working for long hours.

Plus, this device features high-quality 15-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels for better clearance and easy movement. You can make maneuvering easy around the yard with this Craftsman mower, because its wheels are specially designed for optimum comfort and productivity, especially across rough terrain. From our side, this mower gets a 10 out of 10!

However, there is one issue that many people face. Unlike most mowers, the skid plate on this mower is a square instead of a circle, which can cause inconvenience at times.

Overview

This gas-powered riding lawn mower is excellent for you if you’re looking for something to mow a larger area, making it ideal for commercial use. It is powerful, strong, user-friendly, and durable. With features like mow-in-reverse and ready start, this device stands out amongst the crowd of competition and showcases its productivity and efficiency.

Troy Bilt Pony 42X Riding Lawn Mower with 42-Inch Deck and 547 cc Engine Tractor

If you’re looking for a affordable lawn mower that will be great for a small lawn with rough terrain, Troy-Bilt is here to the rescue. It is everything you want in a lightweight machine for home use and light tasks. as it delivers so much productivity at a fairly low price point, so you must consider this one for your home.

This Troy-Bilt lawn mower features a premium 420 cc OHV engine with a built-in oil filter. A powerful engine means a powerful device, as the productivity and efficiency of any mower depend on the quality of the engine and how much power input can give into the device.

And this engine is a powerhouse. It makes sure that the device is capable enough to mow through the roughest terrain with no resistance. If you want a mower for rough terrain, looking at the engine is a must because the stronger the engine, the better it’ll mow.

This device has a 7-speed transmission. which is highly beneficial, especially on uneven ground, as it gives a lot of control into the hand of the operator. The operator gets to choose what speed the mowing should be done at, as different types of terrain need different types of speeds.

With the option of 7 speeds, the user gets to decide which speed will complement which terrain better. It also helps the operator get control over time. so if you want a quick job, a higher speed is better, but for a more intricate job, it’s better to go slow and steady.

This mower has a 42-inch steel deck. which isn’t as big as many other riding lawn mowers, making this one better for smaller lawns. But the steel deck has dual mower blades which ensure clean and smooth cuts and a crisper lawn, as it helps keep the lawn neat and polished.

Plus, it has a mulch and side discharge option that allows the user to turn the grass into mulch that can be used as a fertilizer for the lawn. With this recycling technique, you’ll never have to worry about getting rid of clippings and will get free fertilizer, since the grass has many useful substances that can be fed back into the soil to make it extra fertile.

Plus, this mower features a strong axle made of steel, which is durable and long-lasting. Also, it has a comfortable mid-back seat with ergonomic cushioning. And it can mow in reverse, which can help you mow rough spots and uneven land. With a weight of 485 pounds, it is a lot lighter than most lawn mowers and has dimensions of 70 x 48 x 35.5 inches. This mower gets an 8/10.

However, not everything about this mower is ideal. This equipment can be slightly uncomfortable for some as it makes too many vibrations while driving. These vibrations might seem harmless, but when the operator experiences them, they tend to be absorbed by the human body and can cause discomfort and fatigue later on.

Plus, the light weight of the mower makes it easy to maneuver and store, but it also makes the mower very unstable.

Overview

Despite some flaws, this mower has big positives: it is great if you have a small lawn, it is ideal for home use, it has a powerhouse engine, dual blades for clean cuts, a multi-speed option, and many more features that speak for its durability.

Husqvarna YTH24V54 54 in. 24 HP Briggs Stratton, Hydrostatic Mower

Husqvarna is one of the most trustworthy brands when it comes to durability and power. Their main aim is to make a difference in the lives of users who landscape and shape lawns and urban environments by providing sustainable solutions with innovation, passion, and a customer-friendly attitude. And all of these attributes of this brand are reflected in this YTH 24V54 lawn mower, which is a part of the amazing YTH series.

This mower has a powerful 24 HP Briggs and Stratton V-twin engine. This powerful engine will give you enough power to work through the roughest of terrains without any resistance. To work in rough conditions, a piece of equipment such as this one should have a huge power source, which gives the device enough power to get the job done. And with an engine like this, getting heaps of power won’t be a problem.

This engine is not just powerful, but also reliable. It features ReadyStart technology which makes sure that the device starts right up. Most mowers take several tries to get running, but when it comes to a quick start, you can fully rely on this Husqvarna mower. No matter what the day is, how cold the weather is, and how long of a job you did the last time, this mower will take no time to start up.

With the foot-pedal operated transmission, the user has control over the speed and direction of the lawn mower. This helps the user keep both of their hands on the steering wheel, giving them more control over driving.

Different kinds of terrains need different speeds, so with multiple speed options, the customer uses targets to decide what speed is ideal for the terrain they’re working on. This transfers all the control to the hand of the operator. At the end of the day, you should be controlling the mower, and not the other way around.

This hydrostatic riding mower will be a great option in terms of power and strength. The Stratton hydrostatic transmission is great, and just as good as a gas-powered or battery-powered riding mower.

This device has a 16 inches turning radius which helps the operator navigate through narrow spaces and tight spots. If you have a huge lawn with a load of obstacles like benches, trees, poles, etc., this one will be the best choice. With this device, you’ll be able to maintain every nook and cranny of your precious space.

Despite being high-powered and efficient, this device does not compromise on the comfort of the customer. The adjustable 15 inches high-back seat lets the user be comfortable throughout the job and avoid backache later on. The ergonomic steering wheel adds to increased comfort and an easy step-through design helps ensure that a smooth job is done.

The cutting deck is 54 inches wide. which is wider than most other lawn mowers, and helps you mow a large piece of land in a smaller time. Reinforced with a triple blade, the cutting deck makes sure that all the cuts are clean, the lawn remains neat and polished, and no grass is left unclipped.

This, simultaneously working alongside the air induction mowing technology and the four anti-scalp wheels. will make sure that the lawn is mowed properly. If you’re looking for a precise job in a large area with loads of obstacles, this mower will check all your boxes. This gas-powered mower has so much to offer because of which it gets a 9.5/10 from our side.

But not everything about this device is perfect. This device comes unassembled. and if you’re a pro with equipment, we’re sure that won’t bother you. But if not, you’ll have to hire someone to put it together which is an extra expenditure. Plus, the gas tank on this device is way too small. It needs to be refilled quite frequently which can be a huge inconvenience at times.

Overview

This is a great mower for a high obstacle lawn. If you want a job well done in very little time, this is the one for you, as its diverse features offer everything that you would expect from a high-end lawn mower for rough terrain.

Husqvarna TS354D 54 in. 25 HP Kohler V-Twin Hydrostatic Mower

We can tell you one thing for sure: Husqvarna will always deliver with high durability and constant efficiency. All their products, from motorbikes to garden equipment, have one thing in common: top-notch quality. The Husqvarna TS354D is no different. It is one of the best options to consider if you’re in search of a lawn mower that will last you a long time.

With its 25 HP, 725 Kohler 7000 series engine. this zero-turn riding lawn mower is capable of delivering enough power and torque for the toughest of operations.

Its powerful engine ensures that the equipment can handle rough terrain, large areas, and hours-long tasks. The more powerful the engine, the better the job is done, so this engine gives the customers the perfect experience with efficiency, productivity, and durability.

This zero- t urn riding mower features a hydrostatic transmission with an electric locking differential that can be categorized as commercial grade because of its high power output. This allows the mower to maneuver to the maximum limit and the user gets to keep both their hands free for a comfortable ride as the hydrostat transmission is fully pedal-operated.

It also allows the operator to have control which ensures that consistent speed is maintained even in the roughest of terrains. Pedal operations are the simplest and easiest to navigate with lawn devices, especially if you’re doing a long job.

The front axles are made from cast iron which is strong enough to maintain balance and stability. If the lawn mower isn’t stable, it’ll vibrate a lot, and send vibrations up the operator’s spine, resulting in fatigue and backache later on. But with the stability this device has to offer, you won’t have to worry about any of that.

Plus, the spindle housings are also made from cast iron which makes them durable and long-lasting. This mower is perfect for rough uneven terrain because of how well-balanced it is, unlike many other electric riding mowers.

This zero turn riding mower features a deep deck design that ensures maximum productivity. Plus, the airflow baffles and high-performance blades are an added cherry on top that makes the cutting procedure extra productive.

You have all options when it comes to this device: discharging, bagging, or mulching. Many people prefer bagging so they can discard the waste later on, but mulching is a much more eco-friendly option that turns the grass clippings into a fertilizer that can be used in your garden.

The mower includes many ergonomic features such as a comfortable high-back seat with armrests and a steering wheel set to the optimum angle which ensures that the user is comfortable throughout the job. Husqvarna makes sure that the operator won’t feel any fatigue afterward unlike other riding mowers.

And the cutting deck has a ClearCut feature for maximum efficiency and 10-gauge steel construction with welded reinforcements for increased durability. From us, this mower get’s a 9/10.

However, sometimes the seat can be extremely hard to install and there are no clear instructions in the manual. Plus, this mower has a 54-inch cutting deck which works fine for large lawns but for a small home lawn, this kind of heavy device might not be ideal.

Overview

Despite some drawbacks, this device will be great for you if you’re looking for a mower for a larger area for a long time. It has a powerful engine and many ergonomic features, including a powerful engine, hydrostatic transmission, pedal operations, deep deck design as well as a comfortable seat.

Craftsman E225 42-in. Lithium-Ion Riding Mower-56V Electric Powered Lawn Mower-Fast Charging, Red

If you’re looking for riding lawn tractors a little better for the environment. we’d suggest looking into battery powered and electrical options. They are better for the environment, give fewer emissions, and don’t empty the earth of precious fossil fuels.

Many people opt for gas-powered lawn tractors because they’re much more powerful and reliable, but surely, this mower is no less than any gas-powered mower.

The power of any lawn mower comes from the engine or, in this case, the motor. This Craftsman Mower E224 has a 56 volt, 1500 watt-hour, 30 AH lithium-ion battery which is capable of delivering one hour of continuous cutting time on a full charge. After an hour, you can recharge the battery to full and use it for another hour.

A motor this powerful will also make sure that the task at hand is done with utmost efficiency, so this mower doesn’t do half-effort jobs. but it will make sure that you’ll never go back to another gas powered mower again.

With this eco-friendly mower. you are not just saving the environment, but you’re also saving time and money that is needed for regular maintenance of other mowers by eliminating any need for changing gas and oil.

The only thing you’ll have to do is put the electric lawn mower on charge. Plus, unlike low gas and low oil, when the battery reaches low capacity, the device won’t start to bog, but it will keep on working at the same pace as before.

An important aspect of any lawn mower has to be its ease of use and ergonomic features, and this device isn’t lacking in either. The reverse and forward options are completely in the control of the operator using foot pedals. No need to suffer through hand controls when foot pedals are there for the rescue!

Plus, the steering wheel has a soft touch feature to ensure comfort. The mid-back seat is specially designed so the user won’t feel any fatigue later on, and the LED headlights are available to the user in case they want to go mowing in the dark. This allows the user to easily maneuver the device in all conditions and this mower has easy cruise control.

Also, the user is given a fast charge option that will enable them to charge the battery in 4 hours. Efficient, isn’t it? And this device comes with a 3-year limited warranty and a 3-year battery warranty. This shows the trust and confidence the brand has in its product. This product gets an 8/10 as it is truly one of the best lawn tractors for uneven ground and uneven terrain.

However, there are certain things that you must know when using this mower. The on/off key is close to knee level and you can quite easily turn the machine on or off by accident. This won’t look like a big deal to a reader, but for the user, it can be highly frustrating to keep turning the device back on every time you accidentally turn the mower off.

Mowing in reverse can be particularly useful in rough terrains, as it helps reach almost impossible spots and ensures everything is neat and polished. But with this mower, mowing in reverse can be too slow and inefficient. If you feel like reverse mowing is something you don’t want to compromise on at all, then this device is probably not the right fit for you.

The mower has powerful motors that make sure that any task at hand is performed perfectly and productively. It has three brushless motions that provide immense power to the mower to deal with high working hours and rough terrain. These motors make sure that this mower shows maximum performance.

This corded electric mower weighs 595 pounds which is fairly standard for a riding lawn mower. The deck has 2 blades that make sure the grass is cut neatly and perfectly.

There are twelve positions of deck adjustment. ranging from 1.5 inches to 4.5 inches, that can all be reached manually and make sure that your lawn gets leveled cuts. The Lawn Mower Eyetracking Pattern for Scanning Comparison Tables

Summary: Users are likely to methodically scan comparison tables row by row, from right to left and back again.

By Kate Moran

on 2020-12-13 December 13, 2020

On pages with distinct cells of content, people often scan those cells in a lawn mower pattern: they begin in the top left cell, move to right until the end of the row, then drop down to last cell of the next row and move back to the left until the end of the row; and so on. In our eyetracking research, we observed this pattern on many types of pages and tables (especially zigzag layouts) but most frequently on comparison tables. This article focuses on how the lawn mower pattern applies to comparison tables.

Users are likely to engage in this pattern whenever they are actively comparing several features of two or more adjacent products or services in a comparison table. (An exception would be if a user is only interested in comparing a single feature of the products — for example, price. In that case, the user would be likely to FOCUS on a single row and wouldn’t engage in this pattern. Also, this pattern may be slightly different if the user is interested in comparing only two nonadjacent products in a comparison table that contains more than 2 products.)

The pattern is often proceeded by an appraisal — the user quickly processes the table’s layout before reading more closely.

For example, one participant reading a CNET review for the Sonos One speaker encountered a comparison table. Within a few seconds, he appraised the table by glancing at the column and row labels, as well as some of the cells.

Depending on the user’s interests, she might scan only a portion of the table in the lawn mower pattern. In the CNET example, the participant started by moving in the lawn mower pattern across the entire table. However, he quickly decided he was only interested in the Sonos One, Apple HomePod, and Amazon Echo options — so he narrowed his eye movements to those columns, and stopped processing the values in the last two columns.

We were surprised to find this pattern — we had expected users to scan each row from left to right, starting with each row label. In fact, we observed the lawn mower pattern frequently. (This is the value of eyetracking research — it enables researchers to detect subtle behaviors that would be otherwise imperceptible.)

In general, this gaze pattern is an efficient way for users to process and absorb the differences between two or more offerings, as it minimizes the amount of eye movement. However, if the comparison table content is not informative and thoughtfully laid out, it can disrupt the lawn mower pattern and make users’ comparison tasks more difficult.

Comparison Table Design Can Disrupt the Lawn Mower Pattern

IGN: Long and Complex, Yet Empty

One participant was trying to decide between two game systems, the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Scarlett. (This task was something the participant wanted to do, not a task we asked him to do.) He found a comparison table on IGN.

He began by first appraising the table — taking in the placement of the columns and rows. Then he glanced back up and checked the column labels and the section heading. At that point, he fell into a steady lawn mower pattern: moving methodically from left to right and then back left, working his way through each cell in the table.

The participant encountered three major problems while scanning this comparison table:

  • Length of the table
  • Unexplained jargon
  • Large amounts of placeholder content in the table’s cells (TBA, “to be announced”)

Length of the Table

Even though he was only comparing two items, he sometimes lost track of which system was covered in which column. Occasionally, his eyes would exit the lawn mower pattern and move back up the table to check the column label again.

It might seem simple to remember that the Playstation was in the left column and the Xbox was in the right — but keep in mind, human beings have limited working memory. This comparison was a particularly cognitively taxing task, because he was trying to understand and contrast complex technical features.

Because the column labels were so far from some of the rows, the participant had to leave his scanning pattern, travel far up to page to read the labels, and then return to refind the same row — adding time and cognitive strain to his comparison task.

Unexplained Jargon

In some of the more complicated rows, the user had to pause his pattern to try to understand their content. These rows are noticeable in the gazeplot, showing dense clusters of fixations. His eyes moved quickly back and forth between the two content cells, possibly wondering what the difference between them was. Terms such as 4K, Native 4k, and 8k Support (in the Video Output row) caused many back-and-forth eye movements.

Large Amounts of Placeholder Text

When the participant realized that many of the cells contained the same placeholder text (TBA), he skipped down to the next table section, Backwards compatibility. He then realized that most of the following rows were empty, so he abandoned his lawn mower pattern at that point.

“I like the table format, but the table didn’t really have a lot of information.”

For each row, she bounced from one column to the next, and then down to the next row. When we look at individual stills of her fixations, (roughly 3–5 seconds of fixations displayed at a time) the lawn mower pattern becomes clear.

Occasionally, her eyes would dart back up to rescan a word or image from an earlier row — the lawn mower pattern, like most gaze patterns, is never perfectly neat and orderly.

This highly motivated and methodical user fixated on most of the features listed in the table. Because these two iterations of the same product were very similar, many of the features were identical. For example, in the video still above, both models have these same words listed in their corresponding column:

  • Optical heart sensor
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Microphone
  • Apple Pay
  • GymKit (what this branded term means is not explained)
  • Capacity 16 GB
  • Capacity 8 GB
  • Ceramic and sapphire crystal back

Because she parsed the table in a lawn mower pattern, this user spent a lot of time reading repetitive features that were available in both models.

The few features in that screenshot that had changed were not meaningfully different. For example, the Series 3 had a Gyroscope while the Series 4 had an Improved Gyroscope — while that wording suggests that Series 4’s gyroscope is better in some way, it’s not clear how much better it is or what the improved denomination means.

In other sections of the comparison table, however, the differences between the models were clearer and more distinct. The participant appreciated that there was a comparison table available at all, so she didn’t have to do the work of memorizing and comparing the features on each product-description page on her own.

“I did like how the comparison thing was, to see the differences between them. That’s super helpful, as opposed to figuring out which one has what. It made it pretty easy.”

Support the Lawn Mower Pattern

Comparison tables are consistently popular with users. When implemented correctly, they can help users make decisions quickly and easily. When designing a comparison table, consider that your users are likely to process it in a lawn mower pattern.

Fixed Column Headers

For long tables, use fixed table headers, so that column titles are always visible. This prevents users from having to look all the way back at the top of page, potentially losing their place in the table. When headers are fixed, the user’s eyes are less disrupted from the lawn mower pattern.

Allow Users to Hide Columns

If users are interested in only the first and last product of a comparison table, it can be difficult for them to maintain the lawn mower pattern. Allow them to hide products or services that they are not interested in, if your table has more than 2 columns.

Self-Explanatory Content Cells

Ensure that each cell can stand alone, whenever possible. When users scan your table in a lawn mower pattern, they may be scanning some rows by reading the content cells first and then the row label. If the row label is crucial for them to understand the meaning of the content cell, they may need to scan from right to left, read the label, and then turn around and rescan the content cells.

Your challenge will be to meet this goal while also not overwhelming the user with too much text. Apple’s comparison table achieves this well — it has no row labels at all.

Group Yes/No Features Together

Even though we recommend trying to have meaningful cells, sometimes, for features that have just 2 possible values, it may be easier to use Yes/No or checkmark/X cell values. Because these cases may disrupt the lawn mower pattern, we recommend that you group these rows together.

Help Users Avoid Repetitive Cells

When a feature is shared by to two or more offerings, consider a single cell of content that stretches between columns (see the Xbox example below). This saves users from having to read repetitive content in the lawn mower pattern, darting back and forth between duplicate cells.

Alternatively, offer users a way to show only rows where the offerings differ.

No Jargon

Provide in-context definitions of jargon, either through a tooltip or a quick explanation in the table itself. This is a good idea for any comparison table, whether your users are scanning it in a lawn mower pattern or not. When jargon is unexplained, users often stare at the unfamiliar terms in confusion — pausing their scanning pattern.

Empty Cells Out of the Scanning Path

Avoid placeholder or filler content. When users scan the table in a lawn mower pattern, it’s likely that they will accidentally scan the placeholder content, which provides no information. In the IGN example, the table could’ve been improved by moving all empty rows together at the end of the table — that way, users would not accidentally scan the empty cells, and they would know that IGN did not forget about those important features, but the information was simply not available at the time.
