What kind of gasoline generator is needed for a welding inverter

A gasoline generator for welding inverters

Every welding inverter needs an electrical power supply. But sometimes there are situations in which the work is carried out away from the mains. However, there are no hopeless situations, and one way to solve the problem becomes a portable generator. It is the most optimal device to ensure the autonomy of any electrical equipment. Nevertheless, a gasoline generator for a welding inverter is not suitable for everyone, because there are certain requirements and specifications. The parameters of each unit must match each other, only then can they work together productively.

Reading time: 7 minutes For inverter welding, nothing is impossible in the home and in the garage. You need to fix your gate? Weld a gate? Build a greenhouse? Weld fixtures in the construction of the house? No problem. The inverter will take care of all your needs. It is compact and easy to use, it can be used as a beginner and a master of old school, accustomed to bulky transformer devices.

Naturally, any inverter requires a power supply. All you need to do is plug it in with a power cord. Nothing complicated. But what to do if you have a power outage on your site or there is no power at all?? In these situations, you need a generator for a welding inverter. Previously, we have already told you about what a welding generator is and how it differs from an ordinary generator. Today we will tell you what kind of generator you need for a welding inverter or how to choose a generator for a welding machine, not to miscalculate.

What gasoline generator for a welding inverter

For professional welding work, special monoblocks are produced, or as they are called. a welding generator. As a rule, such devices are designed for professional work. We will dwell on the selection of a generator to connect the welding inverter or transformer to work at home, focusing on their features and how to choose a gasoline generator for welding inverter, given some of the nuances.

In the newly purchased generators, some circumstances must be taken into account:

  • The amount of work;
  • The power of having an inverter;
  • Whether or not there are safety functions on the inverter;
  • Let’s review each one of them in detail.

Duty cycle

Here it is necessary to clarify exactly how much time per hour the welding will work continuously. The MT factor is responsible for this parameter on the welding transformer. The higher the value of the loading time, the higher the percentage of maximum current the unit works at. For example, an MTF of 0.7 means: out of 10 minutes, 7 minutes work, 3 minutes rest. So in 1 hour’s time off is 18 minutes. LP factor.0,7 is considered to be an average value for household appliances. The greater the amount of work, the greater must be the PN.

Taking into account the power of the existing inverter

Can a welding inverter be connected to a gasoline generator? Choice of generator power is one of the most important parameters, because it affects the performance of the welder, as well as the power source. So, if the generator will operate at a constant maximum load, or inverter will not have enough power, it will affect the limits of the circuit elements, and lead to premature failure of circuit elements of devices.

Description

At the moment, two types of generators are offered in stores, which are designed to work in conjunction with welding machines. It is accepted to allocate:

The first type is the usual voltage sources, which support the operation of household appliances and welding inverters.

If we talk about welding generators, they are small-sized devices, additionally equipped with an integrated welding machine. They require very little space, and that is why they are very convenient to take with you. It is important to consider that gasoline generators with a welding machine differ from each other in terms of power. Therefore, consumers need to choose a suitable model with an emphasis on this particular characteristic.

Basic Criteria

Everyone knows that gasoline, diesel and gas generators are used to generate electricity. However, a closer look shows that this equipment has many types and varieties and can differ in dozens of different parameters. Special models of generators are usually used for welding, but they can also support the operation of other equipment. The principle of operation of a welding gasoline generator is almost the same as that of a standard household station. Its main difference is the necessity to constantly maintain the voltage for welding arc burning. The principle of operation of an electric generator is quite simple. Fuel engine transforms thermal energy into mechanical energy, and generator module transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy.

To choose a gasoline generator for welding that will be reliable, durable and energy efficient it is necessary to rely on certain criteria.

kind, gasoline, generator, needed

The main parameter is the power of gasoline generator for welding. The required power level will be indicated on the consuming device itself or in its manual. It is necessary to take into account that the power of the generator must be 25-30% higher than the power consumption of the welding machine, because prolonged work in intensive mode has a negative impact on this equipment.

But choosing a gasoline generator for welding is a painstaking process, which should take into account not only the power, but also many other features. The ideal is a detailed consultation with an experienced specialist, who will be able to take into account all factors and calculate the parameters.

Working principle of a welding generator.

Alternating electric current is generated in the armature winding at the intersection of the welding generator winding with the magnetic power lines, located on the poles of the stator. Then this current enters the collectors, where the alternating current is converted into direct current. Then the direct current flows to the carbon brushes, which are pressed tightly to the collectors, and from the brushes goes to the terminals, which are connected to the welding wire, leading to the electrode.

Each alternator has a magnetisable excitation winding. The winding can be supplied in two ways

  • From an independent source. such a generator is an apparatus with independent excitation
  • From generator itself. it is a generator with self-excitation

Any generator can operate in different modes. Changing the operating mode of the generator can be done by smoothly changing the magnetizing current.

Furthermore, an important structural part of any generator is a series field winding, characterized by a small number of windings. This winding is connected in series to the arc and feeds it with current. that is, the current intensity in this winding is equal to the current intensity in the welding arc. The feature of the serial winding is that it is divided into separate sections. Thanks to this, it can work not only the whole, but also partially.

Principle of operation

A welding gasoline generator is needed for the inverter as source of voltage necessary for its operation.

kind, gasoline, generator, needed

The principle of operation of an ordinary generator is based on conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy. The output of such devices produces a variable voltage, which is characterized by power surges and fluctuations.

What kind of generator is needed for welding machine?

There are two main ways out of the situation:

Both variants have their advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the choice must be made based on the characteristics of the work to be performed.

Industrial products

Industrial samples of generators used to supply power to mobile welding equipment can be of very different designs. In terms of cost-effectiveness and efficiency, the best option is considered a gasoline unit of the same inverter type. In this case, preference is usually given to units from the same manufacturers designed specifically for use with inverter welding equipment (figure below in the text).

It is believed that this combination of these two components of the working complex allows to obtain a sufficiently stable arc and provide the required parameters of high-frequency voltage and pulsed current. According to their class and direct purpose, all existing welding devices are divided into the following types:

Industrial and professional models are mainly used for the production of bulk metal structures and are designed for around-the-clock work for long periods of time. Their proper functioning requires considerable operating currents, capable of providing high-quality assembly of industrial structures. For this type of welding machines gasoline generators, capable of producing currents up to 250-500 Ampere, are needed (see photo below).

To summarize the possible options for selecting a generating set for an inverter, the following should be noted. Thinking about what kind of generator is better to choose for welding, most users give preference to small gasoline units in the inverter version.

What power do you need a generator for inverter welding

The chosen generator for welding must have a capacity not lower than that of an inverter, but on the contrary, somewhat higher, taking into account the necessary margin of 25%. Usually, the power of the generator and welding inverter can be found in the technical passport. Do not make a mistake in the units of measurement, because very often the power of electrical appliances is specified not in kW, but in kVA.

kW is the active power, and kVA is the full power of the appliance. If the power of the welding inverter is specified in kVA, and you want to convert it to kW, it is sufficient to use the following formula to calculate: where 10 kVA 0.8 = 8 kW. It should be understood that the welding inverter will not always work at full power, and here it all depends on the desired current strength. And since the efficiency of the inverter for welding and arc voltage are always a constant value, then, to calculate the power of the generator for welding is not so difficult. The efficiency of welding inverter is 85%, and arc voltage is 25 V.

Knowing these parameters, you can independently calculate what power you need a generator for inverter welding, based on the strength of the welding current. If the inverter for welding has a maximum amperage of 160 Ampere, and you will need for welding just such a current, the power of the inverter will be equal: 160A25V/0,85 = 4705W. Given the required power reserve for the generator, and it is not less than 25%, you can easily calculate its optimum power: 4705 watts 25% = 5881 watts, which is almost exactly 6 kW.

From all of the above it becomes clear how exactly the current intensity of the welding inverter affects the required power of the generator. Consequently, by reducing the amperage on the inverter, you can use a generator of much less power, such as 2.5 or 3 kW. Here it all depends on the diameter of welding electrodes and the thickness of the metal to be welded. For example, using electrodes up to 2 mm you can weld from a generator of 2.5 kW, which capacity will be enough for a welding inverter to give the required welding current.

Classification of generators

Many people, when choosing which generator will pull an inverter welding machine, pay attention only to its power, but there are other important characteristics. Among them:

The two types of internal combustion engines used here are the most popular. The first is a gasoline generator, which is very easy to maintain, is not difficult to repair. It can be used in a wide range of temperatures

One very important practical use of this product is unpretentiousness to fuel quality

The second type of engine is a diesel engine. It is designed more for intensive and prolonged work. You can also use gas generators, but they have not gained wide popularity due to the complexity of operation and problems with fuel supply.

The main parameters of the generator

Most users who picked up an unsuccessful technique made a mistake in selecting the correct power rating

This can lead to unstable operation, but this parameter is not the only one you should pay attention to when choosing which generator you need for welding. The following data are important for the apparatus:

All of these must match the parameters of the used generator. Thus, without a preliminary calculation on compatibility you can not do.

Generator selection

If you do not know how to choose a generator for a welding inverter, then you should start with the type of engine that is in it. This is the main distinction with which to begin the selection. The convenience of gasoline engines. And also the availability of fuel to them is undeniable. The ability to work at different temperatures, as well as universally makes them the most popular option. But if you have to conduct long works, the diesel generators will be more suitable.

The next parameter is the power, current, voltage and other electrical characteristics. When the buyer is wondering what power you need a generator for inverter welding, it is necessary to start from the power of the inverter itself. The thing is that too low power of the generator will lead to failures during welding, and too high will lead to overconsumption of energy.

The size is actually a very important parameter. Ease of use of the generator in practice significantly affects the frequency of its application. The modern inverter models are compact and economical. This results in lower weight so that it can be operated independently or with two people. There are also no problems with transportation. Naturally, powerful machines, which have a wide range of parameters, as well as a capacious tank, can not take up little space, so when choosing dimensions you need to consider this factor as well.

When people are interested in how to choose a generator for a welding machine, they forget about one very important point. After all, in addition to a welding machine, it can power household appliances at home in the absence of electricity or other tools for work

This implies that the equipment should be versatile and suitable for all types of work.

In addition to the fact that the engines can differ in the type of fuel used, it is worth to divide them by the number of strokes. Two strokes are used in budget models. This is a great low-cost solution that is suitable for those who do not need to use the generator very often. The two-stroke engines can’t handle long loads. But for the home it does not make much sense to overpay, so on simple generators such motors are quite appropriate. The four-stroke motor has a higher cost, but for professional use its price is justified. It easily withstands long loads and is found in more serious generators.

Inverter amperage and generator output: what you need to know?

Consequently, when choosing a generator for a welding inverter, the maximum amperage must also be taken into account. So, for example, if the maximum current capacity of the welding inverter is 180A, then you need to multiply it by 25V, not forgetting about the efficiency. Most often, the efficiency of the inverter for welding is 85%, so you can safely take a value of 0.85.

Using this calculation: 180A25V/0,85=5294W, it becomes clear that the power of the generator for the inverter to 180A, should be at least 5.5 kW. However, ideally, you should take a generator with at least 25% power reserve, if you have to weld quite often with an inverter welding. Therefore, the figure for the generator power, automatically increases to a value of 6.6 kW and is optimal in this case.

Many people wonder whether you can weld with an inverter welding from a 2.5 kW generator. The answer is yes, you can, but only for a short time and using for this purpose electrodes no more than 2 mm in diameter, with a current of 30-40A welding inverter, maximum.

In any case, you should understand that by connecting your inverter to a generator, you can easily achieve its failure, since welding requires high power and loads.
