This is a protective board that simply turns off the battery from the electric circuit when the voltage goes beyond the permissible range. Therefore, in addition to the elements themselves, you will need such a BMS board.

Now there are two important points with which I could not experiment several times until I came to the right choice. This is the most allowable working current of the lithium-ion elements themselves and the maximum operating current of the BMS board.

In a screwdriver, working currents with a large load reach 10-20 A. Therefore, it is necessary to buy elements that can produce high currents. Personally, I successfully use the 30-ampere 18650-core production of Sony VTC4 (2100 mAh) and the 20-ampere Sanyo UR18650NSX (2600 mAh). They work great in my screwdrivers. But, for example, Chinese Trustfire 2500 mAh and Japanese light green Panasonic NCR18650B are not suitable for 3400 mAh, they are not designed for such currents. So do not chase the capacity of the elements. Even 2100 mAh is more than enough; The main thing is when choosing. Do not count with the maximum permissible discharge current.

And in the same way the BMS board should be estimated at high working currents. I saw on YouTube how people collect batteries on boards for 5 or 10 A. Personally, I don’t know when I turned on the screwdriver, such boards immediately went to defense. In my opinion, this is a waste of money. Let me say that Makita puts 30 ampers in the battery. Therefore, I use the 25-ampere BMS purchased on AliExpress. They cost about 6-7 and are looking for BMS 25A. Since you need a board to assemble three elements, you need to look for a board called “3S”.

Another important point: some boards may have different contacts for charging (marked with the letter “C”) and loads (marked with the letter “P”). For example, the board may have three contacts: “p-”, “p” and “c-”, as on the native lithium-ion board of Makita. Such a board will not suit us. Charging and unloading (charging / discharge) should be carried out through one contact! That is, there should be 2 working contacts on the board: just “plus” and just “minus”. Because our old charger also has only two contacts.

In general, as you already guessed, my experiments threw a lot of money on both wrong elements and incorrect boards, making all the mistakes that could be made. But he gained invaluable experience.

How to calculate the parameters of a new battery

The resulting operating voltage from 12 V to 14 V is more than enough. Even relatively fresh regular Ni-CA batteries rarely give out more than 12 volts.

If the volume allows, you can simultaneously connect 2 sequential assemblies of 4 batteries, increasing the battery capacity twice. At the same time, mutual location can be anything. in the shape of the case. The main thing is to ensure a reliable connection of wires.
