Corded Electric Lawn Mower Reviews. Cheapest electric lawn mower

Corded Electric Lawn Mower Reviews

A corded electric lawn mower is simply the cheapest, easiest, quietest—and most earth-friendly—option for power mowing your lawn. Yeah, it has a cord, and we’ll talk about that, but first the good news.

Corded Mowers Are Your Least Expensive Electric Lawn Mower Option

Let’s start with price. Corded electric mower range from 85-250, much less than cordless mowers. A corded mower is going to cost substantially less than a similar mower that’s cordless, meaning it has the best value for what you’re getting.

For example, Greenworks’ 20-inch corded mower sells for around 150. Greenworks’ 20-inch cordless mower sells for around 350. The cordless lawn mower provides a little more power, but 200 worth? No chance.

You can buy a corded electric lawn mower now for around 85—probably less than a week of service from a landscaping company. But—wait!—that’s not all.

With a corded electric mower you’ll never have to worry about the additional costs in oil and gas you’d have to absorb with a gas mower. You don’t have to worry about buying a new battery, which you’ll eventually have to do with a cordless mower.

Assuming you don’t do something like try to mow an exposed sprinkler head, your electric mower will require almost no maintenance costs. And if you have solar panels, you won’t even be paying to power the thing!

Corded Mowers Are The Most Environmentally-Friendly Choice

The ease of an electric corded lawn mower is unrivaled: Just plug it in and mow. The big drawback for cordless mower is that you have to worry about charging time. The big drawback for a gas mower is that you have to worry about refilling it with oil and gas.

The ease of an electric corded mower is unrivaled: Just plug it in and mow. No need to worry about the run time of your corded mower. The big drawback for cordless mower is that you have to worry about charging time. The big drawback for a gas mower is that you have to worry about refilling it with oil and gas.

An electric mower is as hassle-free as your toaster.

Your corded electric mower makes very little noise. Sing along with Norah Jones or listen to This American Life while you mow, you’ll be able to hear it all unlike with a noisy gas mower. Mow at night, when your neighbors (or family) object to noise.

The most important reason to buy a corded mower: The Earth will thank you.

Gas mowers spew carbon into the air—the air right around your home, which is the air you should want to keep the cleanest. And of course the gas and oil you’re using had to be sucked out of the Earth, probably through environmentally catastrophic methods like fracking.

corded, electric, lawn, mower, reviews

Cordless electric mowers don’t use gas. But for power, they rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are a massive improvement over lead-acid batteries, both in power and in safety. But they aren’t perfect.

Lithium-ion batteries, according to a 2013 EPA report, use materials like nickel and cobalt that must be mined from the earth just like oil. Lithium-ion batteries can also leak or explode when exposed to extreme temperatures. Do you want to have to worry about bringing your batteries inside during a heat wave or cold snap?

And, let’s consider how important these batteries truly are. You’re basically paying to package up a bunch of electricity in your garage, then take that electricity out to your yard.

The electricity never goes more than a few dozen feet from your house! Does that really justify the need for a battery full of materials that deplete the environment and could explode if it gets too hot?

For the environmental safety of both your home and your planet, corded electric mowers are the best choice.

The Cord Doesn’t Have To Be A Dealkiller

Now let’s talk about that cord. Cords are frickin’ annoying, there’s no way around that. But in the case of mowing your lawn, they don’t really have to be.

All you need to do is figure out a pattern for mowing your lawn so that you won’t run over the cord. Once you get this pattern down, you just mow that way every time. The cord becomes a non-issue.

Compare this to your other corded wheeled appliance, your vacuum cleaner. The interior of your home has so many more obstacles than your yard—and those obstacles are constantly changing, whether it’s because you redecorated, or just started using a new part of the floor for storage.

The layout of your yard, whether you have a small yard or a big one, is much more constant, and much more open. You have to clear it of obstacles, of course, but you aren’t going to have to be winding around couches and chairs the way you do when you vacuum.

Extension Cords For Corded Electric Lawn Mowers

Plotting this course will also help you determine what type of extension cord you’ll need. Because corded mowers use so much power, and range so far from their power source, a lightweight extension cord—like the one you might use to power holiday lights—isn’t going to work. You’ll need to buy a heavy-duty extension cord if you don’t already have one.

Extension cords are rated by how large the wires within are, or their wire gauge. Wire gauge isn’t very intuitive: the lower the number, the thicker the wire, and thus the more power can run through the cord.

Rather than try to figure this out for yourself, check the owner’s manual—even if you buy online, you can typically find it. The manual will tell you what gauge cord you need for that particular mower, based on how far your route takes you from your power source. The better the cord, the more power you’ll get.

Don’t rely on the recommendation on Amazon, sometimes they aren’t right.

Plot Your Mowing Run Before You Buy

You may want to think about plotting out your mowing run before your buy your mower. The duration of the job will depend on the width of the mower’s cutting path. Cutting paths for corded electric mowers range from 14-21 inches.

So a 21″ mower will cut 50% more lawn per pass as a 14″ one. If you break out the measuring tape while you plot your path some basic arithmetic will tell you how many passes you’ll have to make with the mower you’re looking at. The smaller your lawn, the less difference a wide cutting path makes.

Cutting heights and adjustment options vary by mower. Most offer at least six height-adjustment options. Disposal options also vary. For mulching options, Greenworks mowers are your best bet. Most of the other manufacturers, like Black Decker and Sun Joe, only offer rear-bagging as an options on their corded models.

Best Corded Electric Lawn Mowers Reviews [Buying Guide]

Are you still using gas and oil to mow? It’s time to stop

Today only, as part of its Special Buy of the Day, Home Depot is offering a wide range of outdoor yard tools on sale to help kick gas and oil out of your weekly routine. Our top pick is the RYOBI 42-inch 100Ah Zero Turn Cordless Electric Riding Lawn Mower for 3,499 shipped. Down from a normal 4,999 going rate at Home Depot, today’s deal marks the best price that we’ve tracked. In fact, our last mention of a similar system was 4,099 back in March, though that model did have a bagging system attachment which added to the overall value.

If you’re still having to fill a riding mower (or walk-behind mower) with gas weekly, then it’s time to stop that bad habit. RYOBI’s riding mower ditches both gas and oil, as well as air filters, spark plugs, and noisy engines, for a cordless electric experience. Since there’s no engine, the noise is reduced, really, to just that of the spinning blades. On top of that, there’s built-in headlights so you can mow day or night, and it’s even all-weather so you can keep going even when the rain comes. Being a zero-turn, you won’t have to worry about obstacles when mowing either as it can simply spin around anything in its path. Do keep in mind that this model has lead-acid batteries, however, so it won’t be quite as easy to service as the newer lithium-ion models, though that does allow it to come in at a much lower price.

Segway’s latest SuperScooter GT electric scooters now up to 500 off from 2,500

Segway is now offering its latest SuperScooter GT1 Electric Scooter for 2,499.99 shipped. Normally fetching 2,800, you’re looking at the first discount of the year and a well-timed spring discount to deliver the 2023 low. It comes within 100 of our previous Cyber Monday mention last year, and is the second-best discount of all-time since launching in August of last year. Segway’s new SuperScooter GT1 arrives centered around a 1,008Wh battery that powers the 3000W rear-wheel drive motor. Capable of accelerating to 30 MPH in under 8 seconds, you’re looking at a more commuter-ready 37.3 MPH top speed to pair with its 43.5-mile range. Everything is then packed into an aircraft-grade aluminum frame with front and rear suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, and 11-inch tubeless tires.

Packed into a similar design as the lead deal, the SuperScooter GT2 steps up to an even more capable feature set. Segway is delivering an even faster electric ride thanks to a 43.5 MPH top speed powered by a 6000W 2-wheel drive motor that enables a 0 to 30 MPH acceleration in just under 4 seconds. That pairs with a 55.9-mile range, integrated transparent OLED display in-between the handlebars, and 1,512Wh battery. This model of course then steps up in price, and arrives with a more fitting 3,499.99 price tag to match all of the high-end functionality. This is delivering a new all-time low from its usual 4,000 price tag. It’s 9 under our previous December discount from last year and amounts to 500 in overall savings.

Pick up Greenworks’ 21-inch 48V cordless electric mower with four 4Ah batteries for 500

Amazon is offering the Greenworks 21-inch 48V Cordless Electric Lawn Mower for 499.99 shipped. Down from 576, today’s deal marks the lowest price that we’ve seen so far in 2023. In fact, it’s the best deal since it hit 390 back in November of last year, for further comparison. This is really the all-out bundle for mowing your yard without any gas or oil here. You’ll not only get the standard 48V 21-inch cordless mower, but also four 4Ah batteries. The fact that there’s four instead of the normal two means you’ll get up to 70 minutes of runtime on a single charge here, which should be more than enough to tackle most yards before the batteries die. On top of that, this mower is self-propelled, and is rear-wheel drive. It also has a 4-in-1 clipping management system that does mulch, rear bagging, side discharge, and even a turbo button for leaf pickup.

We found the highest performers at the lowest to help you save money on a great lawn mower.

We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs.

We use the word “cheap” in different ways to convey different meanings. In many instances, cheap either equates to rock-bottom or poor quality. But thrifty shoppers looking for a cheap lawn mower prefer to spend their hard-earned money on reliable equipment at an affordable price. A good cheap lawn mower gets the job done every time without breakdowns, slow starts, and constant repairs but lacks the branding and feature upgrades that often boost price without adding measurable value.

Whether your lawn consists of a few square feet or a few acres, a reliable rightsized lawn mower makes yard maintenance easier. Buying one doesn’t need to break the bank. If you’re shopping for a new mower and need a few suggestions, keep reading. This guide showcases one of the best cheap lawn mowers, as well as a few runners up, and makes it easier for you to make a good buying decision.

How We Chose the Best Cheap Lawn Mowers

We started by researching lawn mower purchasing trends to narrow our picks into a few cheap lawn mower categories: gas, electric, cordless, manual, push, self-propelled, and riding mowers. Of those categories, we determined that our top pick should be a gas-powered push mower because it would offer the best combination of low price, mowing power, maneuverability, runtime, and broad adaptability. We wanted to include suggestions for each of the other categories as well since there are so many great options.

When comparing lawn mower prices, we regarded “cheap” as a price no more than 15 percent higher than the lowest available in a given category. For instance, the absolute lowest price we encountered for any manual reel mower was 89, so our pick for that category had to be priced no higher than 102.35 (89 x.15 = 13.35 and 89 13.35 = 102.35).

A good cheap lawn mower must start reliably and mow well. To that end, we limited our search to trusted manufacturers with a proven record of quality. We searched popular, highly rated lawn mower brands and dug deep to learn about the manufacturer. In many cases, a manufacturer produces equipment for multiple brands with certain basic designs and quality attributes permeating the operation.

Through this process we identified 43 really good lawn mowers near the entry price point for their respective categories. Finally, we selected the picks in this guide by ranking according to price, followed by prioritized performance attributes. Yard Machines 20-Inch 125cc Gas Push Mower

Yard Machines 20-Inch 125cc Gas Push Mower

When looking for quality at a bargain price, sometimes there’s a hidden gem among the big manufacturers. The Yard Machines 20-inch gas push mower, manufactured by the same parent company as iconic lawn equipment brands Troy Bilt and Cub Cadet, is a great example. It’s a sub-300 push mower powered by a reliable 125-cubic-centimeter (cc) Briggs Stratton gas engine that stakes a strong claim as one of the best cheap lawn mowers around.

This cheap gas push mower offers dependable mowing capability for small to midsize yards without pricey branding or expensive feature upgrades. The mower conveniently arrives mostly assembled, with the exception of installing the discharge chute and tightening the handle. Engine oil is included and the spark plug is preinstalled. Users adjust the deck height by removing and reinstalling each of the 7-inch wheels at one of three positions on the deck. Add gas, and it’s ready to mow.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB)-compliant gas engine starts smoothly, runs quietly, and produces lower exhaust emissions than similar engines that do not meet this standard. At just 50 pounds, the mower maneuvers easily on flat or gently sloping ground. The simple side-discharge configuration spreads clippings evenly across the yard where they quickly degrade and protect the soil. The annual maintenance schedule is limited to sharpening the blade, changing the oil, and installing a new air filter.

As an inexpensive, easy-to-use, low-maintenance mower, this one is tough to beat. It comes from a respected brand with a long track record of producing quality equipment at competitive prices.

  • Power source: 125cc Briggs Stratton gas engine
  • Cutting width: 20 inches
  • Discharge system: Side discharge
  • Durable Briggs Stratton overhead-valve gas engine boasts a longer working life with less maintenance
  • CARB-compliant engine produces fewer exhaust pollutants for a cleaner environment
  • Lightweight 15-gauge steel deck and 7-inch wheels make it easy to push
  • Side-discharge chute spreads clippings evenly across the lawn for Rapid decomposition

What to Consider When Choosing a Cheap Lawn Mower

Price is only one of several important factors in choosing a mower that will fulfill a shopper’s needs. Buyers will want to start by defining their other shopping criteria in order to make the best buying decision for their situation.

Power Source

Lawn mowers may be powered by gasoline, electricity, or human power. A manual reel mower may be an attractive option for those with smaller, mostly weed-free yards and few sticks, pine cones, or other debris. There is no fuel to buy, and the only required maintenance is an annual blade tune-up. Because of the physical effort required, these mowers are best for lawns under 10,000 square feet.

Those with moderately sized lawns that are up to about ½ acre, and who want to eliminate fuel handling while limiting air pollution and noise, may prefer a cheap electric mower. Traditional electric mowers require a long extension cord and an exterior power outlet. Or, consider a cheap cordless lawn mower that uses rechargeable batteries and won’t restrict movement.

Even with their noise and emissions, gas-powered lawn mowers are still the dominant force for mid-size and larger yards. If a yard is larger than ½ acre, consider buying a cheap self-propelled lawn mower or a cheap riding lawn mower. They provide ample power for all kinds of grass and weeds and are best suited for mowing weedy spots or overgrown areas that may only be cut a few times a year.

Those with the largest lawns may be interested in finding a cheap zero-turn lawn mower to get the work done faster. Due to the complexity of these machines, “cheap” is very much a relative term. Even the cheapest models will still set shoppers back several thousand dollars.

Cutting Width and Number of Positions

The size and configuration of a mower, specifically the cutting width, wheel positions, and handle height positions, play into both mowing capability and user comfort. A wider deck covers more ground faster than a narrower deck but also requires more energy to operate. For instance, manual reel mowers range from about 12 inches wide up to 20 inches wide. The 12-inch mower is easy to push but takes almost twice as long to mow. The 20-inch mower covers ground faster but requires significantly more pushing power.

Wheel height directly translates to grass-cutting height. Most users only need one or two options, even though many mower manufacturers provide six or eight. The key here is to know how high grass should be cut, including any likely seasonal adjustments, and to make sure the chosen mower can do so.

Tech On The Cheap. American Lawnmower Co. ALM Sharp Edge Tech Electric Mower, Unboxing and Review!

Handle height adjustability for push mowers and self-propelled mowers equate to operator comfort. Again, users only need one or maybe a couple of height options. Most of these mowers offer adjustability that is suitable for users within the average adult height range, but if buyers are taller or shorter than average, they may want to try it out in person before purchasing.

Additional Features and Accessories

Cheap lawn mowers often lack in the area of extra features, but not always. Some of the more popular features include various ways to manage the grass clippings. Conventional “one-way” mower decks discharge the clippings back onto the lawn. Two-way decks offer either mulching or bagging capability along with the side-discharge option. Mulching uses a special blade type and deck design to chop the clippings to a finer texture for faster degradation. Bagging sends the clippings into an onboard collection bag that the user can dispose of elsewhere, off the lawn. Three-way decks include all of these options.

A couple of other features to consider are a high wheel design and self-propelled capability. Mowers with rear wheels that are larger than the front wheels are easier to maneuver on varying terrain than those with all four wheels that are the same size. A self-propelled or walk-behind mower looks like a regular push mower but includes powered wheels to drive it while the operator steers. Self-propelled mowers sometimes include variable-speed technology that adjusts to the user’s preference.

Finally, don’t forget about maintenance. Thrifty buyers often wish to perform their own repairs and maintenance and keep old mowers running as long as possible to save money. This means they need cheap lawn mower parts. It pays to research the cost of parts at the outset. Make sure that the purchased mower is compatible with some of the cheap lawn mower batteries, blades, filters, and cheap lawn mower tires available online or through a local parts store.
