  • a set of screwdrivers or a special tool that is supplied by the manufacturer in the kit with the tool;
  • rope that will be used as a replacement for a broken cord if necessary.

A large amount of black carbon on the spark plug indicates a malfunctioning engine.

Before proceeding directly with the repair of the starter and finding out the causes of malfunctions, it is necessary to remove it from the tool body. To do this, you need to unscrew a few screws holding the side cover to which the starter is attached. This is done with a screwdriver or specialized tool.

After the lid is unscrewed, it is turned over and inspected. Next, unscrew the screw with which the starter is fixed. How to tension a chain on a chainsaw. After that, dismantle the clamp and the spring for a smooth start. Now the pulley is accessible for removal, on which the cord is wound. Once the knot on the rope has been untied, it can be removed from the pulley and replaced with a new one. Provided that the loss of starter performance is associated with a break, this may be sufficient to eliminate the breakdown. However, the rest of the parts that make up this element of the chainsaw should be carefully inspected.

When inspecting the components of the starter, the following malfunctions may be detected:

Most often, damage to the soft-start spring occurs from the end where it is visible when disassembling the housing.

  • The pulley could be damaged. There may be cracks or tears or damage to the back. How to tension the chain? To properly tension the chain on a Husqvarna chainsaw with the engine not started, the screws must first be loosened. As a result of these problems, the tool cannot perform work.
  • Damaged soft start spring. In this case, both the spring itself may be mechanically defective, and there may be defects in the place of its attachment. The weakest point of this element is precisely the fastening point and the tip of the spring, which is inserted into it.

If defective or partially damaged starter parts are found, they must be replaced with new ones. In this case, the new elements must correspond to the repaired saw model.

After completing the repair, you need to properly assemble the starter.

The pulley is installed over the spring. In this case, it is necessary to check how much they adhered to each other. Installing a chain on a chainsaw, how to properly tension and check the tension If you have a chainsaw at home, then you should know that it requires special care. In the course of the repair, it is necessary to wind the pulley. This must be done in such a way that, as it rotates, it pulls the cord into the starter. After it is untied, you first need to install the smooth spring in place. Chainsaws and how in a chainsaw video, how to do how to pull the chain on if y. It is enough to make 3-4 turns to give the required voltage. First, the rope is passed through the hole in the cover of the chainsaw.

Replacing the cord

When pulling it out, there is a constant friction of the cable against the starter housing. If the starter spring simply breaks off, that is, one of the hooks is out of engagement, it is enough to insert it, if necessary, slightly tightening the hooks more tightly (just do not break it off!) Install the spring with an outer hook into the pulley groove and start twisting it, while holding with your fingers inside the coil and preventing it from jumping out of there.

How to tension the roller shutter spring?

Strictly speaking, several springs are included in the roller shutter design. The first spring is part of the element that secures the web on the shaft. It does not need to be adjusted, since it provides only the smoothness of the blade and the damping of the inertia of its movement. The second spring is the main element of the so-called PIM (spring-inertial roller shutter mechanism), which ensures fast and uniform lifting of the web.

The essence of adjusting the PIM spring is to adjust the number of revolutions that it makes when lifting the blade. As a result, the lifting speed is adjusted and the length of the web is adjusted. that is, the number of lamellas that is needed to completely cover the opening.

The more turns the spring is twisted. the more the force of its unwinding will be. and the higher is the lifting speed of the web. However, it is not worth striving to ensure that the lamellas literally take off (or rather, fly in) into the box. they may not withstand the limiters that stand on the lower lamella.

Practical advice

You may need to make a few more turns to match the cord retention holes in the pulley and housing. A new rope is threaded through a technological hole and a loop or knot is made: this will allow it to slip out of the pulley. The rope is taken to the side so that it does not interfere with further work. Next, you need to fix the pulley.

First you need to reinstall the soft start spring. It can be used the old one if no damage is found in it. or a new one if necessary. A starter clamp is installed on top of the spring, which is fixed with a special screw. In the article we will tell you how to adjust how to adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw video. After that, you need to make several turns of the rope and run it inside. The cover with the assembled starter is installed in place. Using screws, it is fastened.

After the completion of the repair and assembly, you can start working. Self-repair of a starter does not take much time and does not require complex skills, however, it saves time and money if you perform such work in a service center.

It is necessary to approach the repair of a chainsaw responsibly and timely carry out preventive examinations, monitor the quality of the fuel and oil used. These simple manipulations will increase the duration of the tool in working condition.

How to put the spring

In order to install a new spring, you must perform the following steps:

  • Carefully remove the mechanism clip.
  • Inspect the inside of the cage, in which the spring mechanism is located near the C-shaped element.
  • Lock and tighten the top of the spring with your finger and pull the starter handle to the side.
  • Remove the worn mechanism and wind up a new spring. Bends and twists of the element should be avoided.
  • Assemble a new spring mechanism. It is recommended to do this slowly so that the mechanism does not unwind.
  • Fill the spring and insert it into the starter mechanism.
  • Secure the clip carefully.

Diagnostics

Diagnostics of the tool triggering system is carried out as follows:

  • Unscrew the fastening screws and remove the cover.
  • Remove the screw that attaches the mechanism to the protective cover.
  • Smoothly start the starter by removing the spring and clamps from it.
  • For inspection for wear and defects, dismantle the cable reel.
  • Check the fuel system for water. If there is water inside the system, then the fuel fluid must be replaced.
  • The power unit is inspected for overflowing with fuel fluid. In this case, you need to unscrew and dry the spark plug, pull the starter, dismantling the air damper.
  • Check the spark plug for a spark.

How to fix a starter on a chainsaw

The cause of a malfunction of the chainsaw starting system can be:

  • Drive pulley. This part is subject to high axial and radial loads, therefore it is recommended to inspect the pulley for damage and cracks on the back of the housing before starting work. If necessary, repair the part or replace it with a new one.
  • Spring mechanism. If it has lost its properties or has cracks or breaks on it, it is necessary to replace this element. It is also recommended to inspect the attachment points for defects.
  • Rope launch system. The rope should be inspected for wear and damage. If necessary, replace the part and install it on the pulley.

Device

The chainsaw starter device includes the following elements:

  • ignition system screw;
  • return spring;
  • coil of the starting system;
  • deflector;
  • cap;
  • magneto;
  • drum;
  • spark plug;
  • the electronic unit;
  • wiring;
  • power button;
  • handle and cable.

The main parameters of the chainsaw start system:

  • power. from 2000 to 2500 W;
  • the maximum number of revolutions per minute. 3000;
  • weight. 0.5 kg.

After pressing the power button, the flywheel begins to rotate along with the magnet that is on it.

An electromotive force appears in the system. The resulting current is converted by an electronic unit into electrical signals, which are transmitted to the driving elements. A spark is formed, which provokes the ignition of the fuel-air mixture.

Starter breakdowns and how to fix them

If you have to often start the chainsaw engine, this entails an accelerated development of the starting device. It is impossible to predict which part of the starting device will fail first, but most often the cable breaks or the spring breaks. It is not difficult to determine the malfunction of the cable break, but in any case, if a breakdown occurs, you will need to revise and repair the starters of chainsaws.

Common breakdowns of the starting mechanism of the units and their elimination:

  • Break of the cord and its replacement. As soon as the motor starts, the cable contacts the body of the mechanism in the form of friction, thereby rubbing it. If the cable has obvious signs of wear, then it is better not to wait until the handle comes off completely, and the chainsaw can only be started after repairs. The starter rope must be replaced, for which the case is disassembled and the ratchet is lifted. Raise it carefully to prevent the return spring from jumping off. The old rope is disconnected and a new starter rope is installed in its place. Replace the cover after replacement
  • Replacing the starter springs for chainsaws. Now let’s look at how to replace the spring of the starting device of the gasoline unit. this is a device that returns the drum along with the cable to its original position. If the spring is damaged at the point of connection to the drum (where a loop is formed), then it is not at all necessary to change it to a new one. To do this, you can make a new loop, having previously cleaned the damaged area. After that, the spring is heated to a temperature of 600-650 degrees (when it becomes crimson), and gradually cools down. At a temperature of 150 degrees, a bend should be made, and the part should be completely cooled. Now you can put it back in place and continue to operate. If there are difficulties with heating or the spring bursts in another place, then it should be replaced
  • Do-it-yourself repair and replacement of flywheel dogs is not particularly difficult. Work begins with dismantling the flywheel and removing the pawls. In place of the seized dogs, new ones of the same materials should be installed. If instead of plastic, you decide to put metal, then they may last longer, but the flywheel will wear out faster. How to replace the flywheel dogs of a chainsaw is described in detail in the video.

As a result, the cable may burst, several ratchet teeth crumble, and the shaft will turn at a much lower speed. Therefore, the revision and even repair of the starter are operations that are sometimes carried out several times per season.

How to replace a chainsaw starter spring

If there is damage to the spring, which is often the case on Chinese instruments, then the mechanism can only be repaired by replacing it. But if its damage occurred at the point of attachment, that is, the ear burst, then it can be repaired.

The repair of the spring is heating the place of destruction to 600 degrees, after which it slowly cools down to 100 degrees, at which the end is wrapped in the shape of a fragment. Thus, it will be possible to avoid the loss of elasticity of the product, which will extend its service life. Although most specialists simply replace the product with a new one.

The spring replacement process is carried out in the following sequence:

  • Initially, the clip or drum of the mechanism is removed.
  • There is a spring inside the drum. To dismantle it, you will need to fix its upper part, then pull the starter handle aside.
  • When the old spring is removed, you will need to install a new one. In this case, it is imperative to clean the case.
  • When installing a new spring, insert it into the starter, then hit the groove with a tendril.
  • At the end of the work, you can put on the drum and replace the starter cover.

Today, we will consider the most common case when the breakdown is not so serious and show how to repair the starter with our own hands if the cord breaks off without any destructive consequences or does not wind up due to the fact that the spring inside just flew off, out of engagement. At least, initially I want to believe in it. But in order to find out whether this is so or not, you will need to disassemble the starter.

How to repair a gasoline tool starter with your own hands?

In the case of a break in the starter cord, everything is clear: we take out the old rope, take it that is suitable in length and thickness (linen is possible), pass it through the hole in the reel, tie a knot. Next, we charge the spring to the number of revolutions we need, only after which we fix the handle. and voila! details on how all this is done is clearly shown below.

Installing or replacing the starter spring for lawn mowers, motor-drill, trimmer

But what if everything is in perfect order with the rope, and the reel (pulley) of the starter does not unwind? Let’s consider this issue step by step using the example of the starter of the gasoline ADA GroundDrill motor-drill, which has a pulley with two metal antennae for 2 hooks.

In the case of other types of manual starters of a similar design, which are widely used in gasoline lawn mowers, trimmers and motor drills, the whole process of repairing a starter will look similar, differing only in some nuances.

How to assemble a starter?

The most important thing in the process of self-repair of a starter is to assemble it correctly.

After the spring is fully wound, you need to carefully turn the coil over and insert it into the starter housing so that the second spring hook enters the housing groove.

When installing the pulley (in this photo. black), we look through the hole in it so that the spring hook falls into the groove on the starter cover

Then, if there is a spring under the screw, we first install it, not forgetting to put washers on the bottom and top of the spring.

Carefully insert the cup with antennae into the grooves of the coil and tighten the screw.

Make sure that the washer on the spring does not fall out. Why is it important? The fact is that the spring scratches the plastic cup with its end, as a result of which the latter wears out and begins to press the screw more tightly against the coil. For this reason, a situation may arise that is very similar to a spring break: the handle is pulled out of the starter, but does not come back. However, when the starter screw is loosened, this problem disappears. It is simple to fix such a starter malfunction: just select a spring of the same diameter, but slightly longer, or put an additional washer. If we just loosely tighten the screw, then it will twist and fly out, and this will already increase the likelihood of a spring break, since the pulley will not fit snugly enough to the starter housing.

We screwed the coil to the body, now we need to tighten the spring. Before this, it is necessary to remove the starter handle from the rope in advance. If the knot is too strong, then you can simply cut it off or try to untie it, for example, using a pair of pliers. This is so that after you have cocked the spring, you can thread the rope through the hole in the starter cover. The other end of the rope must be fixed in the reel even before it is installed in the body; the rope does not need to be wound onto the pulley before pulling the spring. do this after.

Before cocking the spring, estimate how many revolutions of the reel the rope should be wound. Let’s say the length of the rope at the starter of the Ada GroundDrill-5 motor drill corresponds to 5.5 turns around the reel. In this case, we make at least 6 turns of the coil in the direction opposite to the direction of winding.

So let’s get started. Without unwinding, insert the rope into the groove in the reel specially designed for it. Everything is ready, we proceed to tensioning the spring. To do this, we rotate the coil counterclockwise. in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the coil when winding the rope. It is more convenient to do this not on the knee, but by pressing the starter with one hand to the floor, and with the other turning the reel directly by the rope attached to it. If the experience is not enough, then you can rotate the pulley itself with both hands, but the rope will get in the way, which can create additional inconveniences. After the required number of turns is made, we pass the end of the rope through the hole in the starter cover, put on the handle, and fasten it with a knot. It is more convenient to do this together with a partner, so that the end of the cable does not accidentally reel inside the starter.

By the way, on your own, you can make some modifications to the design of the starter in order to more reliably fix the end of the spring inside the coil. At this point, who has enough imagination for that. Now I will explain why this is needed. It often happens that the spring in starters of this type, after the first such self-repair and installation of the starter on the unit, flies again after a few jerks. the hook does not hold in the coil groove. And this is despite the fact that the coil almost snugly adheres to the starter cover and the spring there certainly should not hang freely up and down, and even more so until the spring leaves the engagement. It turns out that when the cable is pulled, the spring pulls out, pulls it out of the groove. In this case, you can do the following: cut out a narrow strip of metal, which, in thickness, could squeeze tightly into the groove of the coil along with the spring hook itself. So the hook will not dangle freely in the groove, which means it will not be so easy for it to break out.

A metal plate tightly inserted into the gap between the spring hook and the groove walls will securely hold the spring

Another solution to the problem: drill small holes in the coil on both sides of the groove and, inserting the spring hook, fix it with a thin wire threaded through these holes. But here you need to contrive to make sure that this wire does not touch when rotating the starter cover from the inside and thus does not slow down the pulley. Alternatively, loosely tighten the screw or replace it with a similar slightly longer one. You can think of an option with the installation of some kind of gasket between the lid and the coil.

Does your power tool starter design differ from the above? Faced another malfunction, or do you know the best way to repair a starter yourself? Ask questions, share your experience with others. together we can solve the problem of frequent starter breakdowns once and for all!

REPLACING THE CORD

When pulling it out, there is a constant friction of the cable against the starter housing. To replace, disassemble the body of the unit, and carefully raise the ratchet drum so as to prevent the return spring from jumping off its seats. It is better to do this work together: the assistant fixes the spring, while the cable is being replaced. After fixing the cable in the handle and in the grooves of the drum, the cable is wound around the roller, and the body is assembled.

Chainsaw starter repair

With frequent starts of the chainsaw, some parts of the starter are constantly subjected to dynamic loads. As a result, the cable may burst, several ratchet teeth crumble, and the shaft will turn at a much lower speed. Therefore, the revision and even repair of the starter are operations that are sometimes carried out several times per season.

SPRING REPAIR

If the material of the starter spring is found to be of poor quality, the spring will burst (usually at the point of its attachment to the drum, where it forms a loop). In this case, it is not worth replacing the spring. Thoroughly clean its surface from dirt and traces of grease, carefully grind the place of destruction, and then release the spring at 600. 650 ° C (the steel of the spring should acquire a crimson color). The elastic properties of the spring will not change.

Chainsaw starter device

The principle of operation of a starter for a chainsaw is as follows. A handle is installed in the groove of the body, through which a cable is passed. If the handle is lifted sharply, the cable is pulled out, and engages the drum of the ratchet mechanism, which transfers the movement to the drum with splines provided on the shaft.

In this case, the crankshaft makes several revolutions, and the working mixture in the space between the piston and the cylinder head is compressed. Accordingly, when the handle is lowered, the contact between the ratchet and the splines is lost, and the shaft stops.

With an increase in engine volume, the required amount of the fuel-air mixture required for its subsequent ignition also increases, so the number of jerks for the starting cable for high-power saws increases. Therefore, in order to accelerate the return of the drum, unwanted return springs are used, made of steels with high elastic properties.

Facilitation of starting the chainsaw is implemented in the following ways:

  • By preliminary enrichment of the working mixture, for which there is a special damper in the carburetor design.
  • Installation of an automatic decompression valve, which reduces the working pressure in the cylinder of the chainsaw.
  • Installing an additional spring, which, during the movement of the cable, facilitates the unwinding of the crankshaft.
  • The presence in the design of some chainsaws (for example, Partner S series, Maxcut, etc.) a primer. a pump that provides preliminary fuel pumping.

Self-replacement of the starting cord and the chainsaw starter spring (trimmer)

Any chainsaw requires a starter to quickly start. With accelerated scrolling of the crankshaft of the tool, the fuel-air mixture supplied to the engine is compressed and subsequently ignited. Therefore, the normal operation of the starter for the chainsaw determines the performance of the entire mechanism.

HOW TO PUT THE SPRING TO THE CHAINSAW STARTER?

Fitting the starter spring into the correct groove is not easy, even for an experienced user. First, the spring should be twisted to the previous diameter and installed in the cavity of the drum hub. The outer end of the spring is fixed by the restricting protrusion, and the outer end with a screwdriver should be positioned opposite the hole in the lock. The loop at the inner end of the spring is aligned with the hole with a screwdriver, after which the disc is lowered. Rotate the disc to check if the ratchet dog has come into place. Next, the ratchet itself is assembled.

After installing the spring, it is necessary to adjust its tension. To do this, a cable is inserted into the groove on the circumference, and a return spring is twisted around it. After removing the slack, it is better to wind the spring an additional few turns to ensure the required tension on the part.

As a result, the cable may burst, several ratchet teeth crumble, and the shaft will turn at a much lower speed. Therefore, the revision and even repair of the starter are operations that are sometimes carried out several times per season.

It is necessary to cool the spring slowly, and at 100. 150 ° C it is already possible to gently wrap its end in the shape of a restrictive protrusion on the inner surface of the drum (steel will acquire the necessary plasticity) and insert it into place. The elastic properties of the spring will not change.

How to put a spring on a chainsaw starter?
