Lawn mower engine​ oil changes

Always complete an oil change at the intervals recommended in the engine manual. If you can’t remember how many hours you used your lawn mower since its last oil change, stay on the safe side and change it, along with the oil filter. Oil changes are such a minimal investment but extremely important to engine life.​

How to change lawn mow​​er engine oil

Easy-to-read and understandable engine oil change details are outlined in the engine manual for your unit.

• Stop the unit, wait for hot parts to cool and remove the engine key.
• Position a drain pan under the oil drain hose.
• Remove the drain plug and allow all oil to drain.
• Remove and discard oil filter and install a new filter. When installing a new filter, apply a thin layer of oil onto the oil filter gasket.
• Reinstall drain plug and tighten to specification.
• Remove cap / dipstick from engine oil fill port.
• Fill engine with oil of correct weight / viscosity rating and quantity.
• Reinstall cap / dipstick, wait a few seconds and remove. Check the oil quantity and make sure it’s within the markings on the dipstick. Ensure cap is secure before attempting to start the engine.

When transaxle oil is changed, air s get caught in your transaxles, which is why Ariens instructs its owners to purge the transaxles immediately after changing oil.

If uncomfortable with either changing the oil, purging the transaxles or both, schedule transaxle service with your local Ariens dealer.

Sharpening lawn mo​wer blades

Sharp and balanced blades have a better cut quality and they reduce the need to mow the same area twice and waste time. Additionally, mowing with unbalanced blades can cause equipment damage.

Anyone with experience and the right tools can sharpen blades, no sweat. However, Ariens ® strongly recommends those without confidence to sharpen blades themselves should either purchase replacement blades or have their blades sharpened by an Ariens servicing dealer.

The steps below are an abbreviation of the procedure’s detailed instructions in the operator’s manual. As always, follow the safety instructions in the manual while completing service.

• Park the unit on a flat, level surface and remove the ignition key.
• Remove the left belt cover.
• Remove the PTO idler spring from the anchor bolt to release belt tension, if necessary. On Ariens IKON X and IKON XL models, simply pull the belt out of the deck pulley.
• Remove the PTO belt from around the deck pulleys and the clutch pulley.
• Raise deck to its highest position.
• On Ariens APEX models only, loosen front jam nut on eye bolts to reduce deck lift assist spring tension and remove lift assist springs.
• Place wood blocks under each side of deck.
• Place deck in lowest position so deck rests on blocks.
• Remove hardware retaining deck lift links to deck lift brackets.
• Move deck lift links away from deck lift brackets.
• Slide deck out from under unit.

How to remove lawn mow​​​er blades

Follow the safety instructions in the manual before starting a service procedure because the blades are sharp and can cut if not handled carefully.

• Rotate the deck so its underside is exposed.
• Position a wood block between baffle and blade to prevent blade from rotating.
• With either a breaker bar or an impact gun, remove hardware retaining blades.

Inspect the blades for wear, cracks and damage. If the blade is worn too far, is cracked or damaged, dispose it. Blades that are dull but in good shape otherwise can be sharpened, but only to a certain point as instructed in the operator’s manual. The maximum amount of material that can be removed from a lawn mower blade cutting edge over the life of that blade is 1/2 inch.

Why lawn mower b​lade balance is important

Whether the blades have just been sharpened or not, they should be checked for balance before each season. To check blade balance, slide the blade onto a screwdriver and position it horizontally. If the blade moves, it will need more material filed away from the heavy end of the blade. After the blades pass the balance test, they can be reinstalled. Ensure the blade is reinstalled with the sharp edge positioned away from the top of the mower deck.

Clean mower d​eck

Mower decks packed with grass clippings, dirt and debris can damage your mower, affect cut quality and hurt your lawn. Grass, dirt and debris holds moisture that corrodes bare metal on the spindles and mower blades, damaging them and requiring you to spend money on replacements. Additionally, grass-packed cutting decks can breed fungi and bacteria that can spread across your lawn and hurt it.​

Grass buildup around the discharge area can also affect the aerodynamics under the mowing deck. You’re used to an even quality of cut, but as debris builds up under the deck, it affects the aerodynamic lift that’s needed to give your lawn a good looking cut. Additionally, grass that accumulates around the deck’s discharge area reduces the ability for grass clippings to discharge evenly and can leave you with clumps, instead.

Che​ck mower belts

While the deck is removed, inspect the mower belts for cracks, signs of wear or damage. If mower belts or wheel drive belt show signs of wear upon visual inspection, replace them according to the procedure in the operator’s manual. Don’t leave these to chance, because a busted belt while mowing could leave you stranded in the middle of your yard and interrupt your weekend schedule.

Greasing a lawn mo​​wer

Lack of lubrication can wear critical components like bearings. Aside from applying a thin layer of oil to all pivot points and pin connections on the mower, there are typically only two or three lubrication points on a Ariens mower.

• Caster fork bearings (if fitting present on caster fork hub)
• Caster wheel hubs (if fitting present on caster wheel hub)
• Seat

If equipped with grease fittings on the caster fork hubs or caster wheels, pump grease into each fitting until grease squeezes beyond the bearing seals. Wipe away the excess grease.

If seat adjustment slots are visible on the bottom of the seat, apply a small amount of grease to the seat adjustment tracks and move the seat back and forth to spread grease along the tracks. All lubrication points for your mower can be found in the operator’s manual.

Charging lawn mower b​atteries

Mowers with discharged batteries don’t start. If the lawn mower battery was connected to a battery tender or trickle charger during storage, it should be in good shape. If the battery was left unattended, charge it to the voltage specified in the manual, but don’t fast charge the battery.

Clean batte​​ry terminals

Corrosion is more likely to form on the positive battery terminal where the red wire is connected to, but corrosion on any terminal should be cleaned. Disconnect the battery cables (disconnect the black wire first), brush away corrosion with a wire brush, coat the terminals with petroleum jelly and reconnect the battery cables (reconnect the red wire first) with the original hardware.

A zero turn mower is most comfortable and operates most effectively when adjustments are checked and returned to specification. Make comfort adjustments to the seat and steering levers for the operator that will be using the machine. Check the following items according to the directions in the operator’s manual for your unit:

Knowing which type you have is crucial before beginning the replacement process. Additionally, it’s essential to ensure that you have the correct thread size for your fitting. While most fittings have universal ends, the threads can differ.

Be sure to double-check the type of fittings for your grease zerk to avoid any issues. To do this, do one of three things: look up the exact grease zerk yourself, get in touch with the part manufacturer for details, or simply remove the grease zerk and bring it along to your local parts store when you go to purchase the replacement grease fittings. All of these options will help to ensure you are buying the right hardware for your specific part.

Changing Screw-In Grease Fittings

To remove a screw-in grease fitting, you will need a ratchet and socket or an appropriate tool to fit the fitting. Before unscrewing, clean the surface around the fitting to prevent debris from falling into the hole. Once unscrewed, replace with the new fitting, making sure to check for a plug in the existing fitting.

Changing Drive-In Grease Fittings

Pro Tip: You may need a second hammer to tap the end of the claw-headed hammer to force a better grip onto the grease fitting giving you more leverage when pulling up.

To install your new drive-in grease fitting, take the appropriate size socket and place it over the end of the fitting. Drive the fitting down into the hole, making sure not to damage the grease zerk. You may need to tap the fitting gently with a hammer. As with the screw-in grease fitting, be careful not to damage the end of the fitting during installation.

For many years, folks asked me: “Don’t you have a company logo?” And we really didn’t, as I just never took the time to come up with one…we just had “Earth Tools” written out in a blocky font, and that passed for a logo.

Finally, though, I decided to put some effort into it, and I hired my sister-in-law Trina Peiffer (my wife’s twin sister) to make a line drawing of the Earth Tools sign we have here at the shop. This sign is made out of a 4-foot length of Eastern Red Cedar log; the letters are carved with a chain saw.

I made this sign about 15 years ago (below is a photo). I figured this was a logo with some “meaning”…not just some arbitrary design. Hope you like it!

Why are new BCS tractors BLACK or SILVER?

Beginning in late 2017, the BCS factory started a new “paint scheme” for their tractors and implements: The tractors are just painted BLACK, and the BCS-branded implements are painted SILVER. (and in 2023, the tractor bodies started coming through SILVER as well) So, on the tractors, the only blue parts are now the plastic “beauty” shrouds for the handlebars.

WHY?

Because the BCS factory in Italy produces 3 brands of walk-behind tractors on the same assembly line: BCS, Ferrari, and Pasquali (BCS purchased these other 2 companies in the 1990s…and no, this is NOT the automotive “Ferrari!”). Historically, they had different paint-lines for each tractor and implement line (Blue for BCS, Green for Ferrari, and Yellow for Pasquali)…but sometime in 2017, they decided to optimize efficiency by painting all the tractors and implements “neutral” colors and just letting the plastic shrouds and decals delineate what brand tractor it would be. Hence, non-blue BCS tractors started appearing in the USA in early 2018. (We have told BCS that we think this is a bad idea. the blue was a color most people associated with BCS, and now, if the plastic beauty shrouds are discarded or lost, there is no color for brand recognition, and that would hurt them more in the long run than the few bucks a tractor they’re saving by not having separate paint lines in their factory. We’ll see if they ever bring the Blue back. )

Most PTO-driven implements for walk-behind tractors have a gearbox for the rotating shafts/gears. The “rule of thumb” on implement gearboxes is to keep the oil level at ½ full. There are usually no dip-sticks on implements, but half-full can be determined by simply looking at the gearbox and judging roughly half the height…this will typically result in the gear oil level being about 2 inches below the top of the filler port. You can also stick a wire or thin screwdriver in to gauge the level. EXCEPTION: The Berta Rotary Plows have an oil fill/check port on the SIDE of their gearbox, oriented at the halfway point. So all you have to do is remove the plug with the plow sitting level on its plow rotor (OFF the tractor, so the top cover of the plow is parallel to the ground), and if oil oozes out, the oil level is correct. If none comes out, put oil in until it wants to come back out the hole.

The type of oil used in most implement gearboxes is SAE 90w, 80w90 or 85w140 gear oil or any similar-weight gear oil. Implements are not typically choosy about oil weight…it is more important that there is oil in it!! EXCEPTION: The R2 Rinaldi brand Power Harrows recommend an EP, NLGI “0” Grease (in mechanic or electrician lingo, “One Ot” Grease) …this is a very light-weight grease, which liquefies (when at operating temperature) to a thick gear oil. (EP stands for Extreme Pressure). NOTE: if you have trouble finding the “0” grease specified above, get “00” grease…this is available at Tractor Supply stores as “Cotton Picker Spindle Grease”…this is a bit lighter, but will work fine

Oil level in implements should be checked AT LEAST once per year, and MORE in implements where the output shaft is exposed to lots of material that could wrap around the shaft and damage the oil seals (such as a Brush Mower). Gear oil in implements does not need to be changed much, since implement gearboxes are typically “sealed” (non-vented), and therefore moisture cannot get in. Still, it is a good idea to change gear oil every two or three years….UNLESS you switch to Synthetic gear oil, in which case you can leave the stuff in there 10 years or more, as synthetic gear oil has amazing lifespan characteristics. (Most synthetic gear oil is something like 75w90 or 75w140, and these are fine.)

Only a few implements have grease fittings on them; these are lubricated with multi-purpose grease in a standard zerk-type grease gun. These implements are:

• Lawn mowers: On front caster wheels; grease every 30 hours of use
• Haybalers: (various locations); grease every 50 hours of use
• Hayrakes: (various locations); grease every 50 hours of use
• Cutter bar mowers:

• Oil bath type: on “float” joint near where mower attaches to tractor; grease once per year.
• Newer Double-action cutter bars: same as above, plus on blade drive pins; grease every 20 hours of use.
• Grease-gearbox type: grease all 3 fittings every 4. 6 hours of use

If you have an implement NOT listed here, and you see a grease fitting on it…by all means, grease it!! We are not infallible …
