The roller for the tiller of the power tiller with your hands

Description of goosefoot blades

The most important task of a power tiller in a vegetable garden or field is to fully plow the soil for subsequent sowing and/or planting. In this case the tillers are used. the main working part of the tiller. Cutter is an axle with blades of different configurations. In the process of rotation on an axis these blades as if cutting a layer of soil, carrying out its plowing. By the way, tillers are also often called soil cutters. This cuts not only the top soil layer, but also all the existing vegetation. That is, the tillers plow the ground and remove the weeds.

There are several varieties of cutters. The most popular are sabre-shaped blades. This construction is collapsible. “Goose-feet, on the other hand, are characterized by a molded configuration. They are made of carbon steel alloys. Their main feature is considered to be the triangular-shaped blades, which provides a full mixing and crumbling of pieces of soil. Such a shape is due to the need for high strength in the processing of hard soil.

Particulars of use

This nozzle is often used for plowing the soil for planting potatoes, when you need to get rid of large clumps of soil and organize the prevention of pests such as Colorado potato beetles. It is worth noting that experienced gardeners and agricultural industry workers say that this nozzle does not cut down weeds, but only winds them on itself. Hence the question: does it need to be sharpened? The answer will be positive. After you sharpen this nozzle, you can see how non-large plants will be much easier to cut, and the work with hard soil will be simplified.

How to choose and install the right cutters on a single axle tractor?

The choice of cutters for a power tiller is a responsible process, because this element plays no small role in the process of ensuring the effectiveness of the device. In order to choose milling cutters correctly, it is necessary to understand the distinctive features of these products, to understand what kinds and types of milling cutters exist.

Before making a tiller for a power tiller with your own hands, the scheme of design is studied. The product is installed on a single-axle tractor or motocultivator with the appropriate axle diameter. The minus of the cutter is the lack of sharp edges and winding of weeds on the blades. If necessary, additional elements are installed on the design, made by your own hands. Independently it is possible to make a tool with solid and non-disassembled “goose feet”.

To make the shaped parts of the cutter for the motoblock with your own hands, you will need forging equipment. Special attention is recommended by specialists to pay to the assembly of the construction. Otherwise the axle of your power tiller will be damaged. During the installation of the product, the direction of rotation of the teeth is taken into account.

The goosefoot design is assembled from elements up to 500 mm in diameter. These size limitations allow the tool to go 260 mm into the ground. The blades of the homemade design should enter the ground consistently, without jerks and blows. To use the product for a long time, experts advise to adhere to certain rules. When starting the machine, the “goosefoots” are placed over the ground. Then start the revolutions by slowly lowering the blades into the ground.

To make a simple design, use:

Car springs can be used as plowing elements. The blades are adjusted according to the parameters and bent in the desired direction. Using a welding machine, the elements are attached to the pipe from different sides. Sharpen the blades in the direction of their travel. The resulting design is fixed to the tiller. If irregularities in the unit are detected, it will be necessary to remove it and adjust it.

What kind of tillers for a power tiller?

Cutters on a single-axle tractor are used extensively in tillage. With their help it is possible:

  • Destroy weeds without leaving a trace of them;
  • thoroughly mix all the layers of soil, loosen them, which allows you to raise the fertility;
  • Quickly and efficiently distribute fertilizers on the site;
  • level the surface of the fields.

Such tools are highly productive, which allows you to achieve high results in the processing of over-moistened, clayey and woody soils, improving pastures and meadows.

There are several varieties of tillers, but the most popular:

The second. the standard. Using them you can solve a variety of problems. The main advantage is the special shape of the blades. Made of steel, the construction is demountable, because the material cannot be welded.

“Goosefoot has been on the market for a relatively short time. They allow you to fully work the hardest soil. models are one-piece, can not be dismantled, and therefore are characterized by high durability. Their main disadvantage is that weeds accumulate between the blades, so it is necessary to work only on cleaned areas. They can also be used for preventive treatment of the soil from Colorado potato beetle and other pests.

How to properly sharpen a homemade cutter?

Manufacturers of power tillers sell their machines with already sharpened standard cutters. But what should a person do, if he makes milling cutters for an existing cultivator by himself?? In this case, you will need to sharpen the cutting blades of the device by yourself.

For sharpening equipment will need an angle grinder, equipped with a diamond wheel with a diameter of 12.5 cm. Otherwise, you can use a sharpening machine, but it will be difficult to use it, because of the size and direction of the bending blades. If manufactured cutters are equipped with small-sized blades, you can use fine-grained sandpaper to sharpen them quickly.

Sharpening the blades of the self-made cultivator cutter must be strictly at an angle of 45 °. Determine for yourself which side goes deeper into the ground. It is not required to remove too much metal from the knife, 1-2 sharpenings per season is enough. In some cases, the frequency of sharpening cutter knives can vary. it all depends on the intensity of use and the type of cultivated soil.

If the power tiller is operated intensively in wet weather, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the blades. To prevent corrosion, they must be treated with a special corrosion protection agent, which can be found at almost any auto parts store. It is also very important to try to avoid hitting the cutter against rocks and other hard objects. this will help extend the service life and reduce the need to sharpen the cutting blades of the device.

Putting together the goosefoots with your own hands

If the existing tillers for some reason are not satisfied or are out of order, self-made rotary tillers for power tillers can be an alternative to purchased tools. This task is not particularly difficult and yet has the advantages of the desired degree of reliability of the design and its features, increasing the efficiency of land treatment and, of course, saving money on the purchase of a ready-made device.

The easiest way to make. to study the design of milling cutters of industrial production and schemes, how to assemble the milling cutter, then create an analogue with making the desired adjustments, if they are required. It makes sense to draw drawings for the assembly, taking into account the necessary parameters and requirements for the device.

When assembling the “goose legs” homemade construction includes the following parts:

  • bushing (can be made from a tube with a diameter of 50 mm);
  • flange (made from a thick sheet of steel, can be round or square, which is easier to perform);
  • Blade stands (easy to make from steel angle, profile, automobile springs);
  • blades (optimum material is tool alloys; car springs are suitable).

The blades are welded to the struts, which in turn are fixed to the flanges and the flanges to the sleeve. Sometimes bolts are used for connection, but practice shows that it is much more reliable to use a welded connection.

To prevent premature wear of the blades when cultivating especially difficult and soddy soils, it is recommended to lighten the load by installing the additional limiting wheels on the sides of the device. This somewhat complicates the process of processing, because only the top layer of soil is cultivated, after which you need to remove the restraints and rework.

Homemade cutters for the motor-block. the order of making the equipment

A simple design of tillers for power tillers allows to make such devices by your own hands. Here’s a look at the correct procedure for assembling different types of plowing equipment.

How to assemble the right cutters on a single axle tractor. making sabre equipment

Immediately before making saber-shaped rotary devices, we advise you to study the drawings, which will prompt you the correct order of action when assembling the equipment.

Any sabre tiller to a power tiller consists of two interconnected blocks, each of which contains 12 cutters. One single unit has 3 assemblies, each equipped with 4 cutting blades. The latter, in turn, are arranged in relation to each other at 30 °.

Assemble the sabre tools in the following way:

  • To begin with, make a stand, using 6.3×4 cm. angle;
  • Weld one end of the stand to the flange so that you can then join the 4 cutter blades together;
  • Connect all cutting elements of the rotary cutter with each other by means of flanges and bolts with washers.

The rotary cutter made in this way is very strong and stable, which allows you to use it to work in any density of soils.

Making goose-feet milling cutters

Immediately before assembling this type of fixture you will need to carefully prepare for the work. From the tools and materials you will need:

  • A steel tube with a diameter of 4.2 cm;
  • Steel plates for making the cutting blades;
  • A welding machine;
  • angle grinder with a set of discs.

The active gooseneck cutter is assembled in the following order:

  • You can use the springs from a car to make the cutting elements. Cut them into equal pieces, then weld them to the steel tube that acts as the base;
  • Carefully sharpen the edges of the cutting elements and weld them to the base you are using;
  • Once the equipment is assembled, start it up and make the necessary adjustments. Take into account that after starting the power tiller, the blades of the equipment should hang in the air, not touch the ground.

In order to make the goosefoot cutter last as long as possible, it should be lowered slowly to the ground. Otherwise the machine could break down.

Do-it-yourself installation of cutters on a single-axle tractor

Independent installation of equipment on a single-axle tractor is performed in exactly the same way, both for sabre and goosefoot type attachments.

In either case, the procedure is as follows:

  • Place the cutters on a special wooden “trestle” about 0.5 m high;
  • Carefully tilt the single-axle tractor at a 45° angle, and rest it on the coulter;
  • Place the “trestle” under the handlebar of the power tiller;
  • Dismantle the regular wheels of the agricultural machine, and install self-made cutters instead;
  • On the left and right outer ends of the cutters, securely fasten the discs for the cutters. they will significantly improve the running of the power tiller and make it smoother and more stable.

Once you have done all of the above, you can start digging in the ground. While working, don’t forget to make sure the plates that fix the main and auxiliary cutters to your power tiller are securely fastened.

What else there are cutters for power tillers

Two types of machines (sabre-toothed and goose-footed) are currently the most popular. Deciding which cutters are better for a power tiller, saber or “goose-foot”, farmers prefer both, as they have different capabilities and functions. Sabre routers are standard equipment and are used for ground cultivation. They are time-tested. They are made of high quality steel. To increase the density of the metal, it is hardened and electrically treated. The sabre cutters are prefabricated, they are bolted because this type of steel does not accept welding.
