Do-it-yourself pendulum saw for metal

Advantages and disadvantages

Assessing the advantages and disadvantages, it is worth noting that there are much more advantages. These include:

The disadvantages include only the high cost of the tool. But with professional use, it is compensated by properties and characteristics. It should also be noted the low quality of discs made by unscrupulous manufacturers. Therefore, when buying consumables, it is recommended to pay attention only to trusted manufacturers.

Cutting tool

Abrasive discs are used as cutting tools. The diameter of such a circle depends on the model, its performance and the working requirements of the owner.

Most often, such saws are equipped with 12-diameter discs, with 60 teeth. over, the manufacturer of the discs does not have to be the same as the manufacturer of the instrument. The main thing is that the dimensions of the circle coincide with the recommendations indicated in the technical documentation. To increase the strength and performance of the discs, the manufacturer usually applies carbide to the tips of the teeth.

Features of operation

For ease of use, it is recommended to pre-install a production table or workbench. It is desirable that such a table is adjustable in height, there is sufficient space for storing blanks and sawn parts.

Even for compact home models, the desktop area should be around 8 square meters. m. Approximate size. 2 × 4 meters. This allows you to cut workpieces up to 3 meters in size.

When using a pendulum saw, it is imperative to ensure safety, close protective curtains and use personal protective equipment. This is very important, because when cutting wood or metal, small wood or metal shavings fly out from under the working wheel. When cutting metal workpieces, flammable liquids and materials should be removed from the work table, as hot metal particles can cause a fire.

Pendulum saw for wood and metal

When working with metal or wood, very often there is a need to make an even cut at a certain degree. It is almost impossible to do this the first time with an ordinary angle grinder, for these purposes it is worth using a pendulum saw.

What is a pendulum saw

A pendulum saw is a special type of tool that is designed to quickly and accurately cut various materials. Most often wood or metal. It looks like a small machine on which a cutting tool is installed. The disc is attached to a pendulum-like device. Thanks to this, the mechanism performs pendulum movements, that is, reciprocating, which allows you to make an even cut.

This saw can be considered a kind of circular saw. The difference lies in the design. In a circular saw, the engine and the disc are attached to the machine in a stationary state, and in a pendulum saw, they move with the mechanism.

Such a tool is an indispensable device in any production. The saw allows precise cuts in virtually any material at the desired angle. The cutting element is represented by an abrasive disc. It can be used to cut various metals, wood blanks, plastic products, porcelain, earthenware and other materials.

This is a very dangerous tool, therefore, its use is possible only if all safety rules are observed. For protection, such machines are equipped with a protection system. Increased safety is a must for both industrial and home use.

For industrial production, models with an automatic disc movement mechanism are used. For household needs, a model with a manual mechanism is suitable.

Cutting saws

Chamfering saws are a special type used in construction and renovation work. They are distinguished by increased convenience and abundance.

But the construction of the chain saw is greatly simplified. The pendulum mechanism makes cuts only at right angles, without being able to change the degree. Working disc made of common metals, without hardfacing.

For ease of use, a belt drive is used in such tools, it allows you to make the work smoother, without jerking.

Working with such a tool has a number of features:

  • Due to the high torque, the saw needs to be held firmly and started smoothly to avoid sudden jolts.
  • The workpiece must be secured before sawing.
  • The cutting site should be additionally cleaned, since a burr forms on the workpiece during work.

Saw with my own hands

To save money, such a tool can be assembled by yourself, but it is only suitable for home use. For manufacturing, you need to have a regular circular and the necessary materials (channel and corner).

The frame is produced by installing two channels, to which the base of the pendulum mechanism is welded. Bearing grooves are produced in a lathe for a small fee. It is imperative to make protective covers that can be made from thin sheet steel.

If you are not completely confident in your abilities, then it is better to purchase a new pendulum saw to save your nerves, money and time.

A pendulum saw for metal and a pendulum saw for wood are practically the same. The only difference is in the type of circle used.

Why a pendulum saw for wood is convenient?

A pendulum saw is an electric tool used to perform work on wood or metal. With this device, you can accurately and quickly cut the workpiece into the required number of parts. The tool performs the sawing due to the reciprocating movements of the saw blade along the wood part.

A do-it-yourself pendulum saw for wood looks like a small machine on which the saw blade is fixed in a position perpendicular to the surface on the pendulum. The dimensions of the models differ depending on the power of the unit. With the help of a pendulum, the cutting disc is lowered or raised when cutting wood or iron.

What is it?

The saw performs reciprocating movements during operation. Reciprocating works in the same way.

The electric pendulum saw is a fairly compact machine, where the cutting tool is a disk and is mounted vertically on a special pendulum.

The size of the device may vary depending on the model and power. The pendulum provides the ability to raise and lower the cutting blade when working on metal or wood.

The assortment is extensive, which allows the buyer to choose such popular saws as Makita, Bison, PM 400, etc.

How the pendulum saw works?

Pendulum saws for wood are similar in principle to circular saws. The only difference between the two types of saws is that for pendulum saws, the cutting blade moves during operation with the help of a pendulum device, while for the disk model the blade remains stationary.

With such a saw, you can make an accurate and clean cut at an angle of 90 degrees. Some models can cut at a different angle when the saw blade is tilted.

When cutting metal or hardwood, you can use an abrasive disc. For different types of work, you can use removable disks of different configurations. Universal circular blades are also produced to work with any material of parts.

Any saw must be fitted with safety devices that reduce the risk of damage from a fast rotating saw blade.

The main disadvantages of these cut-off saws:

  • to saw by hand, you need to make a lot of effort, which leads to quick fatigue;
  • the cutting model, like the jigsaw mechanism, can cut a limited thickness of the workpiece;
  • the device has a low performance, therefore it is used as an additional equipment or for solving household tasks.

A jigsaw for wood can also help you make patterned cuts with curved lines.

Features of the device

  • Circular and pendulum saws have approximately the same principle of operation;
  • The main difference between the devices is that in the disc cutting tool and the motor are fixed motionless, while in the pendulum device they rise and fall due to the pendulum;
  • The pendulum cut-off unit provides a high-precision right-angle cut;
  • Additionally, tools such as PM 400, PM 55, Interskol, Zubr, Makita, KD 300, PM 70 and other representatives of the pendulum saw segment are capable of cutting at an angle;
  • Often a cut-off system for cutting wood or metal includes an abrasive disc;
  • The use of appropriate discs allows you to work efficiently. To process a particular product, you just need to replace the canvas;
  • The blade is also universal, allowing you to saw all kinds of workpieces with one disc;
  • A modern electric pendulum saw for cutting workpieces is distinguished by the fact that the cutting blade, the disc can be replaced in the shortest possible time. This is also the difference between the segment leaders represented by PM 70, PM 55, KD 300, Zubr, Makita, Interskol, PM 400, etc.;
  • Every cutting tool must be equipped with protection systems. This is because a rotating cutting blade is potentially hazardous;
  • By choosing the desired size of the device, you can cut blanks at home;
  • Manufacturers offer both household and industrial models.

With quite significant advantages, the electric pendulum saw has several disadvantages.

  • Sawing requires a lot of force, just like using an angle grinder.
  • The cut-off saw has certain restrictions on the width of the cut material.
  • The device does not differ in high performance, therefore it often serves as an auxiliary equipment in industries or in home workshops.

Pendulum saws for metal and wood

The pendulum saw is a do-it-yourself power tool for wood and metal. The device provides fast and accurate cutting of workpieces. Many people think that a pendulum saw and a reciprocating saw are identical units. In fact, there are certain differences between them.

Reciprocating saw

In home workshops, angle grinders, circulars, pendulum saws, and reciprocating saws are widely used. They all have their own design and technical features.

So that you don’t have any problems finding the differences between a pendulum and a reciprocating saw, let’s make some clarity.

  • The home reciprocating saw is great for the job;
  • Like a pendulum saw, a reciprocating saw can be equipped with special saw blades for wood or metal, or with universal cutting tools;
  • The electric saber saw is distinguished by the performance of reciprocating movements;
  • The device has a compact size, it is conveniently used in a home workshop;
  • An electric reciprocating saw is a great alternative to a hand hacksaw, which has certain limitations and difficulties in work;
  • The main drawback that a reciprocating saw has is vibration during operation. Vibrations are especially noticeable when working on thick wood or metal.

Pendulum saw for wood

Previously I made a cutting machine for wood, but I would like the same but for wood. Indeed, for working with metal with a cutting wheel, this tool is simply irreplaceable, but for working with wood, it is also necessary to give the saw a longitudinal motion. Therefore, I had to make another version.

The design of the second pendulum saw, in relation to the first, has the following additional capabilities:. longitudinal motion;. the electric motor is mounted on a bracket and is able to move along the frame to tension the belt and not depend on one size of the belt length;. the saw can be rotated around the axis and set the angle from 0 “to 45 °, which is necessary in the manufacture of some types of carpentry spikes;. the saw can be fixed from swinging in any position;. there is a stop that allows you to set the cutting depth.

Characteristics of structural elements

The devices are produced on the basis of asynchronous and collector motors. Asynchronous ones are characterized by a long service life and relatively quiet operation. The brushed motors have good power, but the carbon brushes that are located in it are prone to abrasion and must be replaced periodically.

The design features and parameters of the saw blade affect the quality and width of the cut. On some models, the disc only moves vertically. However, there are devices with horizontal guides, in which the cutting blade moves back and forth. The kerf width, if there are guides, will be several times greater than without them.

The device, equipped with an electrodynamic brake, allows the saw blade to stop instantly.

The presence of the function of maintaining the speed of the cutting unit at a stable value, regardless of the degree of load, reduces the time for the operation and increases the efficiency of the saw.

On some models, a laser pointer is installed to fix the mowing line in the cut. If there is vibration in the device, the pointer may get lost, it will be necessary to periodically adjust it.

Homemade Metal Band Saw

DIY Saw

If you need to cut boards to length or precisely make a complex burr on the details, such a table-shelf for a saw with a disc with a diameter of 250 or 305 mm will allow you to achieve impressive results.

Long side wings keep workpieces flush with the saw table surface, and removable stops with measuring bands ensure accurate and accurate cuts.

Strong and reliable fastening to the wall using slats with bevels (the so-called “French suspension”) is painfully easy.

Make a pair of sturdy wing tables

First, cut out the fasteners A of the short table to size (Fig. 1 and 2). Mark and cut out the trailing edge of each bracket. Then cut out the strut B bars of the short table. Make short planks C with bevels at the bottom edge, as shown in fig. 3. Auxiliary ruler and circular saw do it yourself how to do it yourself. Use screws to secure these parts between the brackets (Fig. 1 and 2) to create the base A / B / C.

How these saw models work?

The device can be classified as circular models. The cutting disc is mounted on a special fixed frame, and the machine itself is powered from the electrical network. The name “cut-off” is explained by the fact that the cutting wheel goes down at the moment of cutting, and after the completion of sawing it returns to its starting position.

The powerful saw blade is able to cut not only wood or metal, but also porcelain, glass, plastic or tiles. You can use a blade removed from a circular saw to cut wood.

Design features

A pendulum saw is a type of miter saw for trimming jobs. It is distinguished by a simple design and not always budgetary cost.

The work table is a base plate. On a pendulum base, the table is equipped with a cutting unit that can fix the tool. The electric motor is installed in the structure at the rear, as it has the function of a counterweight. Depreciation of the device is carried out by additional springs.

The protective cover is installed on the blade for safe cutting operations. When lowering the cutting unit, the cover does not interfere with the work, as it automatically moves.

  • These models do not have the ability to cut the workpiece at an angle.
  • In order to improve the quality of the cut and adjust the cutting depth, limiting devices are used.
  • Using a rotary work table, you can change the position of the workpiece in the horizontal plane.

The simplicity of the design allows not only to perform operatively operations, but also to carry out cutting on wooden, metal, polymer blanks.

The size of the structure may vary depending on the model.

How to make a homemade circular saw?

  • Making the foundation
  • Installing the engine

A homemade mini circular saw is a great way to save money. Because not every home craftsman can afford to purchase it in order to make small repairs. But sometimes you can’t do without such a tool. A homemade circular saw that turns out can do an excellent job with the task associated with small construction, for example, in the country.

In order to make repairs at home or in the country, you will need a circular saw, and you can do it yourself.

Circular DIY Saw

Homemade circular saw is meant for sawing logs.

The thickness of the logs that this equipment can cut depends on what the power of the electric drive is.

If it is necessary to cut thick pieces of wood, these saws are equipped with a shaft, a belt drive and the most powerful engine.

Any do-it-yourself circular saw consists of a lower and upper part. Electrical equipment is installed in the lower part:

  • transformer
  • engine
  • starting device.

It is better to make the frame of the upper part of the saw from a metal corner of 25 mm. The approximate dimensions of the rectangle in the form of which the upper part is 600×400 mm. Pipes are welded in its corners (recommended height 2.2 m, and diameter 17 mm).

Additionally, 2 corners are fixed along the frame and to strengthen the bearings. The distance between them is determined by the size of the shaft. Clamps are used to secure the bearings. Chips will not jam between rings, balls and cage if sealed bearings are supplied. A thread must be made at the end of the shaft so that the disc is clamped.

Circular saw bearing assembly diagram.

The bottom part is best made massive so that the circular saw is stable. To make the frame for this part, a 40 mm corner is used. To secure the engine, it is necessary to additionally reinforce 2 corners across the frame. An asynchronous three-phase motor with a power of 1.5 kW and 1500 rpm is the best option for a DIY circular saw. The pulley groove has an internal dimension of 80 mm and is pushed onto the shaft. There is also a need to weld on a small pad in order to fix the trigger on it. Pipes with a length of 2.2 m, welded to the corners of the frame, are needed to tighten the belt so that the metal thumbs tighten the thin pipes.

After that, the lower and upper parts of the hand circular saw are embedded in the supports, the role of which is played by pipes, then the belt is tightened and pressed with the thumbs. The start of an asynchronous motor in this model of a homemade saw is carried out through starting capacitors. To reload the engine and increase the torque, it is possible to use a 220/36 400 W transformer, the connection of which is carried out according to an autotransformer circuit. The location of the capacitor and transformer does not really matter in the functioning of the circuit.

DIY pendulum saw

It is useful to replenish the arsenal of metal-cutting machines in a home workshop with a pendulum saw. You can fix it on the workbench, next to the bench vise, in which the workpiece to be processed is clamped. The saw’s working tool is an abrasive disc. Steel rods, corners, pipes, sheets and even metal tiles, porcelain and glass, hardened to any hardness, are in his teeth, and the cut surface is quite clear. If you replace the disc with a saw with a fine tooth, then you can saw wood, plywood or plastic, while a diamond disc will make it possible to process stones.

To secure the workpiece, it is convenient to use a rotary vise, in this case, cutting can be done at an angle, which is very convenient when preparing parts for welding.

Various attachments to the saw allow you to make shallow cuts and grooves, and even turn it into a regular circular.

For such a saw, you need a 340 W single-phase electric motor (from an electric grinder) or a 400 W three-phase AOL 21-2 type with a rotational speed of 2800 rpm. Transfer of rotation to the machine spindle. by a V-belt of type A-I018 from a GAZ-24 car.

The base of the saw is a square-section backbone frame, to which the spindle body is welded on one side, and a plate for installing the motor on the other. A 1/2 ” pipe is passed through a groove in the frame. it is the body of the swing axis of the saw. When welding, make sure that the motor shaft axis, the spindle shaft and the swing axis of the saw are strictly parallel. After welding, be sure to align the frame, clean the welded seams and paint with nitro enamel with a preliminary primer.

Belt guard and abrasive disc guard are made of 2 mm sheet steel. It is best to weld workpieces from the inside with a fillet weld. The belt guard is screwed directly to the engine and frame, to which the abrasive wheel guard is also screwed. The drive handle is located on the removable belt cover.

Before assembly, fill the spindle bearings with CIATIM-221 grease. Insert felt rings soaked in liquid grease into the bearing grooves.

In the assembled saw, the motor must outweigh the spindle and be below, between the supports, otherwise, at the moment the saw is turned on, the abrasive can hit the workpiece and crumble.

Mini circular saw

With this indispensable tool for home building, you can saw any material and at any desired angle. This means doing all the work associated with a rotating saw blade. Now let’s look at how a mini circular saw is made with our own hands.

Pendulum circular saw with powerful electric motor

Circular saw table layout with lifting-lowering mechanism.

Making the foundation

It is very important to ensure that the inner edges of the insert are perfectly parallel. The attachment of the tool from the bottom to the table will be carried out so that the circular saw is between the sheets of the table top in the middle of the gap. A mini circular saw is attached to the drilled holes on the table in this position.

Cutting a profile, pipe or any other workpiece with a hand tool strictly perpendicular to the axis and cleanly is not an easy task, and using an electric pendulum saw is a mere trifle.

The device consists of a frame-base and a sheet of metal (or a sheet of durable plastic), pivotally connected by an axis on one of the sides. On the frame on the side opposite to the axis, a corner is welded parallel to it, into which pipes or profiles are laid for cutting. An electric motor and a shaft are fixed on the top sheet, connected by a drive belt. Remember to attach a convenient handle.

At the end of the shaft opposite from the pulley, a clamp is made for attaching a cutting wheel or a circular saw. Such a pendulum saw can cut almost anything: metal, plastic, wood (even logs). When sawing logs, the lower frame rotates around the hinge axis by 180 ‘. In this position, she is fixed with something, for example, an assistant can stand on her. In order not to move a heavy log after each saw, it is easier to carry the saw along it.

Workpieces can also be cut at different angles. To do this, the corner on which the workpiece is laid must be fixed to the base frame not by welding, but by bolts and provide for the possibility of installing it at different angles to the saw blade.

When working on a pendulum saw, the safety regulations must be strictly followed. The supply cable must be protected from mechanical damage by a steel flexible hose that can be taken from the shower hose. The electric motor, as well as the saw itself, must be reliably grounded. Only fasten the working tool to the shaft with a nut with a left-hand thread. It is dangerous to operate the saw without protective goggles.

If during the operation of the device the drive belt looses, it must be tightened, for which it is enough to lay a plate of the required thickness between the frame plate and the engine.

Console (pendulum)

A bushing shaft is horizontally installed in the holes of the racks, to which a rocker arm is welded, consisting of two levers, the ratio of which is one to three. A platform for installing an electric motor is welded on the short shoulder. On the long arm, the cut-off wheel drive shaft. The ratio of the levers length is approximate, it must be calculated so that in the idle position the weight of the engine outweighs the weight of the assembled saw unit (with protective covers). To bring the disc of the turned-on machine into contact with the metal, it is necessary to apply a small but perceptible force.

For convenience of work, a return spring is attached to the lower part of the engine platform, and the angle of deflection of the pendulum upward is adjusted by a cable or chain, fixed at one end to the table, and the other to the lower part of the long arm.

Homemade cut-off machine with an electric motor

It is not difficult to make a cut-off machine for cutting metal with your own hands. For this you need: an electric motor, a pendulum, a drive, a work table.

A metal cut-off machine is an indispensable tool in a home workshop, a locksmith’s shop, on a construction site. Many industrial models of these tools are produced, but their price is sometimes not available not only to a private craftsman, but also to a small enterprise. There is a way out. it is not difficult to make a cutting machine for metal with your own hands. This requires only certain skills in working with a welding machine, locksmith tools, and some qualifications of an electrician. From materials, too, you do not need anything scarce, or not available in free sale.

Drive unit

To tension the drive belt, the motor is fixed at the rear of the swingarm by 4 bolts located in the longitudinal slots. It can move in the direction of the central axis of the machine (perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the motor shaft) by 5-7 centimeters. This will maintain the correct belt tension and prevent slippage. It will also be easier to replace the belt if the previous one becomes unusable.

Engine

If there is a three-phase motor with a capacity of about 3 kilowatts, it can be connected to 220 volts, using the place of the “star” circuit, the “triangle” circuit. But it should be borne in mind that its power will decrease by 25-30%. The main thing is that the number of revolutions indicated on the nameplate will remain.

For installation on a metal cutting machine, the engine must have a number of revolutions equal to 2500-3000 per minute. This is due to the fact that it is at such speeds that the cutting disc works optimally.

For a homemade metal cutting machine, circles with a diameter of 300-400 millimeters are used. Here, too, one must proceed from the needs of production. It is not worth chasing a too large disc diameter. the farther from the center the working edge is, the less cutting effort, and a more powerful motor will be required. The optimal ratio of engine power and disc diameter. 2 kilowatts at three thousand revolutions and 300 millimeters in diameter.

A self-made metal cutting machine must first of all be safe. The cutting discs indicate the maximum number of revolutions at which they can be operated. As a rule, it should not exceed 4400 rpm. If you get more, the disk may be destroyed, which is unsafe. If the number of revolutions is less than 3000, then the cutting speed will be insufficient, and the disc will overheat and wear out. It is these figures that should be taken as the starting point for calculating the power transmission.

do-it-yourself, pendulum, metal

You will have to buy an electric motor with a power of 1.5-2 kW, single-phase or three-phase. In addition, you will need two pulleys, a shaft, bearings 204 or 205, a metal corner, sheet steel 2-4 millimeters thick. When all this is assembled, the actual production of the machine begins.

Drawings can be made by yourself using material from the Internet, or you can use ready-made ones, for example these. But experience shows that it is best to adapt the drawings to the materials that you have in stock. As a rule, do-it-yourself constructions work best when you “customize” them for yourself. Naturally, in this case, certain rules and requirements should be observed that are put forward for a tool of increased danger, such as a cutting disc machine or a pendulum saw, both home-made and industrial.

It consists of several main nodes:

  • electric motor;
  • pendulum;
  • drive mechanism;
  • cutting disc;
  • desktop.

Desktop

It is not particularly difficult to mount a disc-type cutting machine for a qualified locksmith. It is important to adhere to some fundamental requirements:

  • correctly calculate the rotational speed of the disk;
  • adjust the angle of rotation, it must be strictly perpendicular to the plane of the desktop;
  • set the feed force of the disc to the cutting zone;
  • install an emergency stop button on the handle;
  • equip the cutting machine with protective guards for the disc and rotating parts.
